The Space
Anne Mellon, of the Mellon family, married Frederick Sayen and joined him on the 30-acre property he bought in 1912 near Hamilton Square, land close enough to the family’s rubber mill that Sayen could build his botanical hobby into something lasting. He built a bungalow-style Arts and Crafts home, then spent years filling the grounds around it with plants collected on trips to China, Japan, and England, a collection that has continued to grow ever since.
The result is a public botanical garden that couples can also marry in: over 1,000 azaleas, nearly 500 rhododendrons, and more than 250,000 spring bulbs, alongside dogwoods and heirloom plantings that peak each year around the garden’s Azalea Festival, held on Mother’s Day. Walking trails, fish ponds, and a scatter of gazebos, including a White Gazebo and a Brown Pond Gazebo, thread through the property, and each reads differently in photographs depending on the season chosen.
Capacity & Layout
The historic Sayen House holds up to 98 people, a number that sets the ceiling on the guest list for any couple marrying here, and the outdoor ceremony sites work by permit rather than by default: couples can be married at the White Gazebo near the property’s Nottingham Fire Company corner or at the Brown Pond Gazebo further into the gardens, each with its own backdrop and its own walk for the wedding party.
Reception space is inside the Sayen House itself, with the surrounding botanical gardens, including walking trails, ponds, and bridges, available for cocktail hour and portraits. Since the gardens are public parkland during normal hours, a couple’s rental gives them priority use of the ceremony and reception areas, but the overall layout still favors a day built around the house as the hub and the gazebos as the ceremony points, rather than one enormous combined space.
Amenities
On-site parking is available, which matters on a property this size where guests might otherwise be walking a long way from a street. Photography permits are available for both ceremonies and portraits in the gardens, formalizing what is already one of the property’s strongest draws: more than a century of curated plant collections that keep changing through the seasons rather than a static backdrop.
The public gardens carry no admission charge and stay open daily from dawn to dusk year-round, so a couple’s guests who arrive early, or stay to walk the grounds afterward, are welcome to do so without a separate ticket. Beyond the house rental and the gazebo ceremony sites, there is no large indoor ballroom on the property, so the amenities here are the garden itself, plus the historic house at its center.
Location & Getting There
We’ve handled a wedding here, and the property sits in Hamilton Square as genuinely public land, a municipal botanical garden that Hamilton Township has owned since 1988, which means the roads and paths in are the same ones any visitor uses on a Tuesday afternoon. That civic character is part of the setting: no gate, no resort driveway, just a working public garden that happens to also host private weddings.
Ceremonies held outdoors at the White Gazebo or Brown Pond Gazebo put the couple and their vows in open air, where sound has room to spread and a DJ running ceremony audio needs to project rather than rely on walls to hold it. The reception, once it moves inside the historic house, becomes a closer, contained room instead, where the same sound system settles into a much smaller, warmer space.
