The Space

Colonel David Sanderson built Ryland Inn in 1796 as a country home and stagecoach stop, and the property has carried that dual identity, a residence and a stop for travelers, into its current life as an events-only estate. The Grand Ballroom is anchored by a 30-foot stone fireplace and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Hunterdon County landscape, while the Coach House occupies a 200-year-old restored barn centered on an original silo still standing on the grounds.

Landmark Taverns, which also runs Logan Inn in New Hope and Stone House in Warren, manages the property today, pairing its historic architecture with a modern culinary program led by Chefs Anthony Bucco and Christine Ayers. Ingredients come from Landmark’s own Dancing Goat Farm and an in-house butcher shop, so the kitchen supplying a reception here draws on the same estate rather than an outside contract caterer.

Capacity & Layout

The Grand Ballroom seats up to 240 guests for ceremonies and receptions, while the Coach House holds up to 200, giving a couple two rooms of genuinely different character to choose between rather than one fixed layout. The ballroom’s fireplace and windows suit a more formal seated dinner, while the barn setting of the Coach House, built around its original silo, leans rustic even at a comparable scale.

Beyond the two main rooms, private dining spaces called the Chef’s Room and the New York Room give a couple somewhere to host a smaller rehearsal dinner without booking either large hall. The ten-acre estate also includes manicured gardens, fire pits, and outdoor gathering areas, so a floor plan here can spread a ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception across genuinely separate spaces rather than one room reset three times.

Amenities

On-site accommodations currently include thirteen guest rooms across three cottages in the Breyer Barns, with a forty-room boutique hotel in development and scheduled to open in summer 2026, which will substantially expand overnight lodging directly on the property. Distinct prep spaces serve the wedding party: the Groom’s Cottage has a pool table, barber station, and bar, the Hayloft Cottage is a separate retreat for the newlyweds, and the Pelham House and Kimblewick House cottages add hair, makeup, and nail stations alongside their own kitchens.

The Duck Bar handles cocktails, wine, and beer, and the estate’s wine program has won Wine Spectator awards, a detail worth knowing for a couple building a reception around a strong beverage program. With the Grand Ballroom available as indoor ceremony backup, a couple booking either main room has weather coverage built into the property rather than a separate contingency to arrange.

Location & Getting There

Ryland Inn sits in Whitehouse Station, in Hunterdon County, on ten acres that still carry the character of the 1796 country estate Sanderson first built as a stagecoach stop. That rural setting, working gardens and grounds rather than a paved commercial lot, gives photography real depth across the property, from the ballroom’s parkway-facing windows to the Coach House silo.

With cottage lodging on site now and a forty-room hotel coming in 2026, out-of-town guests will increasingly be able to stay on the same grounds as the wedding itself rather than driving in from a hotel elsewhere in Hunterdon County. Inside, the Grand Ballroom’s stone fireplace and hard floor-to-ceiling glass carry sound differently than the timber-framed Coach House barn, so a DJ setting up in the ballroom should expect a brighter, more reflective room than the warmer, wood-toned acoustics of the restored barn next door.
