The Space

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden opened on April 25, 1974, on 170 acres along the Lower Saluda River in Columbia, and the property carries real history beyond the animal habitats: it holds ruins from one of South Carolina’s first textile mills, from the early 1800s, and it is the site where General Sherman’s troops camped and shelled Columbia before burning the city during the Civil War.

The Zoo campus and the separate Botanical Garden campus sit on opposite banks of the river, connected by an 800-foot bridge, and in August 2025 an aerial gondola, the Saluda Skyride, opened to carry guests between the two on nineteen cabins. Riverbanks hosts weddings ranging from 15 to 500 guests, with dedicated event venues including the rustic Ndoki Lodge, the Magnolia Room, the Walled Garden, and various outdoor spaces across the property.

A wedding here can scale from a small ceremony of 15 people up to a full buyout of the park for 500, with a dedicated event sales team handling logistics at that range of sizes. Ndoki Lodge, on the Zoo side, gives a rustic indoor setting, while the Magnolia Room sits over on the Botanical Garden campus, so the choice of venue also decides which half of the 170-acre property the event happens on.

Because Riverbanks operates as a working zoo during the day, event timing is built around the animal exhibits and general admission hours rather than around a venue that sits empty otherwise; couples get access to a property that is landscaped and staffed at a scale most standalone wedding venues cannot match, spread across eight zoo districts and several themed garden areas.

Amenities

Catering is provided exclusively by Riverbanks’ own team, with an emphasis on sustainable seafood and eco-friendly practices, and bar service is available for private events, so food and drink service is handled in-house rather than through an outside vendor. Full accessibility is built in, with wheelchair rentals, stroller rentals, and an ADA-compliant main entrance, useful for a guest list that includes very young or older family members.

The property has been recognized repeatedly for its quality, named Travel Attraction of the Year twice by the Southeast Tourism Society, awarded the Governor’s Cup as South Carolina’s most outstanding attraction, and ranked among the top zoos nationally by Newsweek and USA Today. Riverbanks sits a short drive from downtown Columbia, with free general parking and accessible parking near the entrance, and it draws more than a million visitors a year as South Carolina’s largest gated attraction, so the surrounding infrastructure, roads, parking, and amenities, is built to handle a real crowd rather than the modest traffic of a typical private venue.

With events split between an indoor rustic lodge, an indoor Magnolia Room, and various outdoor garden and courtyard spaces, a DJ setup changes significantly by venue: Ndoki Lodge’s wood interior holds sound in tightly for a warm, contained reception, while the open-air garden spaces need speakers aimed carefully across the crowd since there are no walls nearby to help carry or contain the music.
