The Space

Fred W. Symmes Chapel, known to almost everyone simply as Pretty Place, is an open-air covered chapel that Fred Symmes built in 1941 and donated to YMCA Camp Greenville, which had been founded in 1912 and moved to this mountain site after J. Harvey Cleveland, whose family donated the land, convinced camp leadership in 1920 to build atop the ridge beyond Caesar’s Head. The chapel sits at 3,200 feet on Standing Stone Mountain, looking straight out over the Blue Ridge Mountains, and draws an estimated 312,000 visitors a year.

The chapel took real damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024, losing more than half its roof and several support beams, though the cross at the front stood through the storm. It reopened on January 3, 2025 after three months of repairs totaling $455,000, following earlier renovations in 2012 and 2018, so the structure a couple stands in today has been actively maintained through both storm damage and routine upkeep rather than left to age untouched.

Capacity & Layout

The chapel seats 350 guests across 16 pews arranged in two rows, with a center aisle 5 feet 6 inches wide running from the back down 16 steps, about 66 feet total, to the cross at the front. That descending aisle is a defining feature of a ceremony here: guests are seated below the couple rather than level with them, and the walk down the steps becomes part of the ceremony itself.

Pretty Place hosts around 550 wedding ceremonies a year, but it is a ceremony-only site: there are no reception areas on the premises, and no food or drink is allowed at the chapel itself, so every couple who marries here plans a separate reception venue for the rest of the day. A bride’s room measuring 10 by 15 feet and a groom’s room at 10 by 12 feet with its own restroom are available for last preparations before the ceremony.

Amenities

Parking holds roughly 100 vehicles, and the venue recommends a person to direct parking for any guest list above 150, since the mountaintop lot is not built for unmanaged overflow. The site has no accommodations of its own, with the closest hotels about 21 miles away in Brevard, North Carolina, so out-of-town guests need lodging arranged elsewhere.

The chapel is pet-free, tobacco-free, and alcohol-free, including during private ceremonies, and accessibility is limited: a rough handicap ramp reaches only the back of the chapel from the parking lot, with no ramp access to the front near the cross. Wedding season runs mid-March through November for standard bookings, with winter dates available from December through mid-March, and starting in summer 2026 the chapel will close to public visitation entirely from May through August for camp operations.

The chapel sits within YMCA Camp Greenville’s 1,400 acres, with Brevard, North Carolina the nearest town with hotels at 21 miles away; a South Carolina marriage license is required, and the ceremony can be performed by any ordained or licensed minister or a South Carolina licensed notary.

The chapel already has a permanently mounted sound system available for a rental fee, wired for a wireless microphone, a wired microphone, a lapel microphone, an instrument hookup, and an AUX cord for playing music, which means a DJ handling ceremony music here is plugging into an existing outdoor-rated system built into an open-air, covered structure rather than bringing in standalone speakers to fight the mountain wind.
