The Space

Jack Nicklaus designed this course in 1989, when it opened as the private National Golf Club, and came back to renovate it himself in 2012, softening the green contours and re-grassing the putting surfaces with A1/A4 bentgrass. Pinehurst Resort bought the club from the Robinette family in 2014 after 25 years as a private facility and folded it into the Pinehurst portfolio as its ninth championship course, renaming it Pinehurst No. 9. It remains the only Nicklaus design in the North Carolina Sandhills.

The clubhouse built around that course holds more than 3,500 square feet of flexible event space, anchored by a Ballroom with vaulted ceilings, whitewashed beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows looking straight out over the course itself. At 7,106 yards and a par of 72, the course provides the kind of open, groomed view that makes the Ballroom’s glass wall worth building a reception around.

Capacity & Layout

The Ballroom holds up to 140 guests across 2,380 square feet, which puts it comfortably in range for a mid-sized wedding reception with room to dance once dinner clears. Beyond the Ballroom, the clubhouse breaks into smaller rooms: a Conference Room for up to 12, the Jack Nicklaus Lounge for up to 50, and the Smith Room for up to 80, so a wedding weekend can spread its rehearsal dinner, a smaller family gathering, and the main reception across different rooms of the same building.

Outside, the Event Lawn holds up to 150 for a reception, which slightly out-sizes the Ballroom itself, so a couple choosing between an indoor reception under the vaulted ceiling and an outdoor one on the lawn is really choosing between an intimate glass-walled room and a somewhat larger, fully open-air setup.

Amenities

The Ballroom’s architecture is itself the standout amenity here: vaulted ceilings, whitewashed beams, and floor-to-ceiling windows are not common combinations in a golf clubhouse, and the course view through that glass wall gives photographers a consistent, unobstructed backdrop without needing to walk guests anywhere else on the property.

Having four distinct indoor spaces, the Ballroom, the Conference Room, the Lounge, and the Smith Room, plus the outdoor Event Lawn, means the clubhouse can host several linked but separate parts of a wedding weekend under one roof: a rehearsal dinner in the Smith Room, cocktail hour in the Lounge, and the reception itself in the Ballroom, without ever feeling like the same space is being reused and reset.

Location & Getting There

As part of the broader Pinehurst Resort, No. 9 sits within the same Sandhills setting as the rest of the property, with the course itself as the defining view from the clubhouse rather than a backdrop guests have to travel to see. Being the only Nicklaus-designed course in the region gives it a distinct identity even within a resort known primarily for Donald Ross.

For sound, the Ballroom’s vaulted ceilings and hard whitewashed beams call for speaker placement that accounts for a taller, harder-surfaced room rather than a low flat ceiling, while the floor-to-ceiling glass wall reflects sound back into the room, so getting levels right there differs meaningfully from running the same reception out on the open Event Lawn.
