The Space
Osteria Del Monte opened in 2001 in Sapphire, in a building that had already been converted from a private residence to a restaurant a decade earlier. The founders, Giovanni Minervini and Claudio Trevisan, also owned Trevini Ristorante in Palm Beach and opened this location after their Florida customers, who had mountain homes nearby, suggested a North Carolina spot.
Joseph Nuzzi III, nephew of the restaurant’s original general manager, took over ownership in February 2023 and completed a full renovation by that May, so the current room is a recently refreshed version of a two-decade-old space rather than an untouched original. Executive chef Jose Salas has cooked with the Nuzzi family for more than 20 years, giving the kitchen real continuity through the ownership change. When Osteria first opened in 2001, liquor by the drink was still illegal in North Carolina, so the restaurant operated as BYOB, a detail from its early years that has since given way to the full bar service on offer today.
Capacity & Layout
The restaurant runs on a light-filled lounge, a main dining room with hardwood floors and wood-paneled walls, an outdoor patio, and a bar area, a layout built for restaurant seating rather than a single open banquet room. A private event here works within that existing footprint, likely combining the dining room with the lounge or patio rather than one large cleared space.
Because the venue operates seasonally, open April through December, a wedding date needs to fall inside that window, which rules out a winter ceremony here. The white-tablecloth, fine-dining format also points to a smaller, seated event rather than a large standing reception, in keeping with a working Italian restaurant rather than an event hall.
Amenities
A full bar with craft cocktails is on site, along with vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free menu options, useful for a reception where the couple wants the same kitchen handling every guest’s dietary needs. Patio seating adds an outdoor option for cocktails or overflow seating when weather allows.
The restaurant has kept its original 2001 menu items on file in what owner Nuzzi calls the restaurant’s white leather binder, so couples with ties to the original opening years can still request dishes from that era. On-site parking is available, and reservations are recommended, standard for a working restaurant booking a private event around its regular service. The 2023 renovation refreshed the dining room and lounge without erasing that history, so the space reads as updated rather than replaced.
Location & Getting There
Osteria sits in Sapphire with outdoor seating that looks out toward Highway 64, a mountain-corridor setting rather than a resort compound, so guests should expect a restaurant on a mountain road rather than a standalone estate. It suits a smaller wedding party who want a genuine Italian dinner as the centerpiece of the evening.
Because the space is a working restaurant with a dining room, lounge, and patio rather than one open hall, sound stays contained within whichever room the event occupies: hardwood floors and wood paneling in the main dining room carry conversation and music cleanly, while the patio is open air, so a DJ setup here is scaled to a restaurant-sized room rather than a large ballroom.
