The Space
Old Mill Farm is a 14-acre working farm on Highway 751 that has been in the same family for more than 100 years, and it still functions as a real farm alongside its event business. Goats, a donkey, and a camel named Cornbread live on the property, and guests can fish in the farm’s pond or mine for gemstones, which makes this a venue where a wedding weekend can double as an afternoon out for anyone who arrives early.
The grounds carry rolling hills, rows of native Muscadine grapes, a pond with a fountain, and Moore’s mercantile store, all inside a 14-acre footprint that the farm’s own materials describe as a Century Farm. That heritage designation, alongside a Best of Chatham 2024 recognition for its event space, points to a property that has built a real local reputation well beyond weddings, as a summer camp and birthday party venue too.
Capacity & Layout
Old Mill Farm has two named indoor spaces built around very different feelings: The Cave, an underground room with natural stone walls and soft lighting suited to an intimate ceremony or cocktail hour, and The Party Room, with wood-beamed ceilings and open countryside views suited to a full reception. The grounds can comfortably hold functions of 200 or more guests, with up to 200 seated for a formal dinner.
A rental includes the venue as it stands plus a staff person who helps coordinate parking and the day’s logistics, and bookings run eight hours start to finish, covering setup and cleanup inside that window rather than as an add-on. Outside food is welcome, since the farm does not yet run its own restaurant, though small pre-packaged snacks are sold at the bar for anyone who wants something between the ceremony and dinner.
Amenities
The bar pours local craft beer, wine, cider, and mead, and an ice cream parlor on site gives a farm event a genuinely different late-afternoon option than a typical cocktail hour. A Getting Ready Suite is included with a booking, so the wedding party has a dedicated space rather than sharing The Party Room before the ceremony starts.
Certified service animals are welcome, though household pets are not permitted, a rule the farm holds to protect its own animals rather than out of any general policy against pets. Peak season runs April through November on weekends, with December through March and weekdays counting as off-peak, which is worth knowing for a couple weighing dates against the farm’s own busiest stretch of the year.
Location & Getting There
Old Mill Farm sits close to Chapel Hill and South Durham, just minutes from I-40, which keeps it reachable for guests coming from either the Triangle or points further out on the interstate. Self parking is available on the grounds, and 2 to 4 staff members work a given event depending on the guest count, scaling the on-site support to the size of the day.
With The Cave’s stone walls and low underground ceiling against The Party Room’s open wood-beamed layout, a DJ is really working two different rooms with two different acoustics: the stone space naturally holds and reflects sound in a tight underground room, while the taller, more open Party Room needs a setup built to fill a bigger volume of air without losing clarity across the wood beams overhead.
