The Space

Oakwoods Country Club has been part of Wilkesboro since the early 1950s, when a group of prominent Wilkes County citizens met at the home of Pat M. Williams, Jr. and his wife Dottie in the fall of 1952 to organize a private country club. The club formally organized that December and opened for play in January 1954. The original nine holes were laid out by Arthur Hamm, who trained under Donald Ross, and a second nine by Ellis Maples followed in 1964 to complete the 18 hole course that exists today.

The club sits on 148 acres at the base of the Brushy Mountains, giving the grounds and clubhouse a foothill backdrop rather than flat open land. The course itself has been reworked over the decades, redesigned by Tom Jackson in 1971 and restored by Kris Spence in 2000 and 2001, so the layout on the ground today reflects several generations of golf architecture rather than a single original design.

Capacity & Layout

The clubhouse anchors the property alongside a pro shop, and beyond the course itself the club includes tennis courts and a driving range built in 1966, plus a larger swimming complex added in 1977. That range of amenities means events here are not limited to a single room, with outdoor space around the pool and courts available depending on how a private event is laid out.

The course plays as a par 72 at 6,337 yards with a slope rating of 130, a full 18 hole layout that gives the grounds real scale beyond the clubhouse itself. A slope of 130 is on the more demanding side for a member course, a detail golfers in the wedding party may recognize even if it has no bearing on where the reception itself is held. For an event, that scale means photos and cocktail hour can move outside toward the course and mountain views rather than staying confined indoors.

Amenities

Oakwoods has been a private club since its founding, with roughly $100,000 pledged toward construction when the members first organized it in the early 1950s. Longtime head professional Bill Greene served as course supervisor for 32 years before retiring in 1994, the kind of long tenure that speaks to a club run consistently over a long stretch rather than changing hands often.

The combination of golf course, tennis courts, driving range, and swimming complex built up over the 1960s and 1970s gives the property a country club feel that goes beyond just the fairways, with locker rooms and clubhouse space rounding out what is available for members and their guests hosting a private event.

Location & Getting There

The club sits at the base of the Brushy Mountains just outside Wilkesboro, North Carolina, foothill terrain that sets it apart from a flat coastal or piedmont course. The mountain backdrop is visible from much of the property, including the clubhouse grounds where a private event would likely be centered.

For a DJ, a clubhouse event at a country club like this typically means an indoor room built for dining and dancing, with the option to open onto outdoor space near the pool or course for cocktail hour, so sound generally stays contained to the interior room while background music or a smaller setup can carry outside for a reception that spills onto the grounds.
