The Space
Opened on September 27, 2018, after more than four years of development, this building replaced the original Memorial Student Union that had served the campus since 1967 under the nickname the Living Room of the University. At 150,000 square feet across three floors, the new Student Center is a different scale entirely, built as a modern hub for student life rather than a renovation of the old union.
The first floor holds six food concepts, Aggie Wings, Sub Connection, Einstein Bros. Bagels, 1891 Bistro, a bookstore, and a convenience store, which means an event here sits inside a genuinely active, always-running building rather than a rented hall that’s empty the rest of the week. The second floor holds the ballroom, and a newer Esports Lab, added in February 2024 with gaming monitors, PlayStation 5s, Switches, and Alienware PCs, shows the building keeps adding to itself.
Capacity & Layout
The ballroom, listed as room 205, splits into north and south sections with a divider, and the numbers change depending on how it’s used: up to 500 for an assembly-style event or 300 for a seated banquet. That gap between 500 and 300 is really a gap between two different floor plans, rows of chairs facing a stage versus round tables for dinner, and the divider means a couple can also run a smaller wedding in just one half of the room.
The room comes with banquet services built in, so a couple isn’t sourcing linens, tables, and chairs from an outside rental company on top of everything else. Because the ballroom sits on the second floor of a 150,000-square-foot, three-story building, load-in for a reception has to travel through the building rather than pulling straight up to a door, which is worth planning for with vendors who haven’t worked here before.
Amenities
Banquet service in the ballroom is the headline amenity, and it covers the basics that would otherwise need to be brought in separately for a room this size. The building’s food concepts on the first floor, Aggie Wings, Sub Connection, Einstein Bros. Bagels, and 1891 Bistro among them, aren’t catering for a private ballroom event, but they do mean the building runs its own food service operation day to day, which is useful context for anyone coordinating with campus dining.
We’ve handled events at this Student Center, and the building’s newer amenities show even where they don’t directly touch a wedding: the Esports Lab, opened in February 2024 with twelve gaming monitors, ten PlayStation 5 consoles, ten Nintendo Switches, and seven Alienware PCs, is the kind of detail that signals a building still actively being invested in rather than one coasting on its 2018 opening.
Location & Getting There
The Student Center sits on NC A&T’s main campus in Greensboro, inside a working university rather than a dedicated event property, so guests should expect a campus environment: other buildings, student foot traffic, and the general rhythm of a college in session rather than the quiet privacy of a rented estate. That trade-off comes with real upside for anyone with a connection to the school, since a wedding here happens on ground with actual meaning to the couple.
Scheduling around the academic calendar and campus events is worth confirming early, since this building runs on a university’s schedule rather than an events-only calendar. For sound, the ballroom’s divider between its north and south sections matters: a DJ working the full room gets one large enclosed space to fill, but if the wedding only books one half, that same divider helps contain the music instead of letting it bleed into a section that isn’t part of the event.
