The Space

Four acres in the middle of downtown Raleigh, Moore Square has been public ground since 1792, one of five green spaces surveyor William Christmas laid into his original plan for the city, itself modeled on William Penn’s Philadelphia. The park spent decades as a civic gathering point, home to churches in the 19th century and later the heart of Hargett Street’s era as Raleigh’s Black Main Street in the 1920s, before falling into decline in the late 20th century.

Landscape architecture firm Sasaki rebuilt the park from 2014 to 2019, reopening it in August 2019 with the historic oak trees preserved, added seating for better sightlines across the grounds, and a redesigned layout that still reads as a downtown square rather than a manicured event lawn. The 2019 work also removed old shrubs that had blocked views, so the park now opens up in a way it had not for years.

Capacity & Layout

The Central Lawn holds up to 3,000 people, or it can split into two halves of 1,500 each for a smaller footprint, which matters for a couple deciding whether their wedding needs the whole park or just a corner of it. Martin Plaza is the mid-size option at 300 to 500 guests, closer to what most weddings actually need, and it sits as its own defined space rather than an unmarked patch of grass.

This is downtown, urban ground, so layout means working with paved paths, event plazas and a splash pad already built into the park rather than an open field a planner starts from scratch. Shade comes from a trellis and the park’s oak trees rather than a rented tent, and outdoor cover is part of the existing design, which is worth knowing when a couple is deciding how much weather backup to budget for separately.

Amenities

Outside catering is allowed, but the park’s staff reviews and approves it first, and any event serving alcohol needs a permit with a 100 dollar fee, both details to build into the planning timeline rather than assume on the day. The park is wheelchair, scooter and ECV accessible on its paved sidewalks, with zero-entry points at the Martin, Hargett and Blount Street sides, though the Visitor Center itself is reached only by stairs.

Moore Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and sits inside a local Historic Overlay District, and it won the International Downtown Association’s Downtown Achievement Award in 2021 for its planning and design. Street parking is available around the park’s edges rather than a dedicated lot, so a couple hosting a larger guest count should plan for how people will actually get to a downtown block.

Location & Getting There

Moore Square sits in the heart of downtown Raleigh, bounded by Martin, Person, Hargett and Blount Streets, which puts a wedding here in walking distance of restaurants, bars and hotels rather than out on its own. That is the trade a couple makes with a downtown park: less privacy than a rural venue, but a city already built around the guests for the rest of the weekend.

Because this is fully outdoor space with paved plazas, open lawn and mature oak trees rather than any enclosed room, a DJ has to plan for open air throughout, sound that has to compete with a downtown setting and no walls to hold the mix together, so the system and speaker placement matter more here than they would inside a barn or ballroom.
