The Space

Henry McGill bought this land in 1950 when it was still the Avant Fuel & Ice Company’s coal and ice yard, and his wife Helen spent years turning it into a garden, planting more than 500 rose bushes before it opened to the public on Mother’s Day in 1967. The City of Charlotte purchased the property in 1976 with a federal green space grant, at the recommendation of Councilman Harvey Gantt.

A nonprofit board has managed the garden since 1995, and it remains the only park in Charlotte owned and operated by the city itself rather than Mecklenburg County. Over 1,000 rose bushes in more than 200 varieties now fill the beds, alongside annuals, perennials, herbs, fountains, benches and sculptures by Charlotte artist Tom Risser, with a 34-ton coal hopper from the old Seaboard Railroad still sitting on site as a marker of the land’s industrial past.

Capacity & Layout

The garden seats around 100 guests, a number shaped by the 1.4-acre footprint and the winding paths that run through the rose beds rather than an open lawn. That scale makes this a fit for a wedding built around intimacy and a garden setting rather than a large guest list, and couples planning a bigger event should size their list against that ceiling early. Because there is no separate indoor ballroom on site, weather plays a more direct role in a wedding day here than it would at an indoor venue, and couples should plan around that from the start.

Ceremony and reception both take place on the garden lawn, with seating arranged among the plantings rather than in a separate hall. A small brick building on the property now houses Rosie’s Coffee & Wine, which opened in 2019 and gives the space a working bar without needing an outside vendor for that piece.

Amenities

Tent rentals are available for outdoor cover, since the garden itself is open-air, and couples handle their own catering as a bring-your-own arrangement, giving them freedom over the menu without a required in-house caterer. Restrooms and parking lots, along with street parking, serve the site during private events.

The garden holds a rare distinction as an All-America Rose Selections public garden, one of only four in North Carolina and 53 in the entire country, a designation tied to Helen McGill’s original planting work in the 1960s. Public hours run Sunday through Thursday 8am to 10pm and Friday and Saturday 8am to 11pm, with no admission fee.

Location & Getting There

The garden sits in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood, a genuinely urban setting rather than a rural retreat, which means most guests are driving in from within the city rather than out to the countryside. Henry McGill worked in this garden nearly every day until age 99, then weekly until his death in 2007 at age 103, and that hands-on history is still part of what a couple is choosing when they book the space.

We have worked this room, and the open-air garden setting means sound carries differently than an enclosed hall: a DJ setup here works best kept compact and pointed inward through the plantings, since there are no walls to hold the sound and the winding paths break up a straight line of sight across the whole space.
