The Space

Loray Mill opened in 1902 as the largest textile mill in the world, a title it earned the moment it started running, and the building carries that scale today: 600,000 square feet total, with exposed brick, original mill windows, and ceilings that run 38 feet high in the main event space. It was built by the Boston engineering firm Lockwood, Greene and Company for Gaston County businessmen John Love and George Gray, and local newspapers nicknamed it the Million Dollar Mill for its size and cost.

The mill’s history runs through a 1929 strike, when 1,800 workers walked off the job over wages and conditions, and through decades as a Firestone tire-cord plant before it closed in 1993 and sat vacant until Firestone donated it to Preservation North Carolina in 1998. A $40 million restoration beginning in 2013 turned the mill into what it is today: 189 loft apartments alongside restored commercial space, opening to the public in 2014 with the industrial brick and timber left intact rather than covered over.

Capacity & Layout

The Lucy Penegar Grand Hall is the primary event space, 3,100 square feet with that 38-foot ceiling overhead, and it holds up to 250 guests depending on setup, with a flexible layout that works for both ceremony and reception without a room change in between. For a smaller wedding or a rehearsal dinner, the Tap House sits in the mill’s original boiler room, a more intimate, separate space with its own industrial character.

Having ceremony and reception in the same flexible hall means your guests are not shuttled between buildings or floors, just resettled around a room that gets rearranged while cocktail hour runs elsewhere on the property, including the courtyard or the saltwater pool area. A one-bedroom loft is included as part of some event packages, giving the couple a place to change or stay over without leaving the building.

Amenities

Catering is full-service and included, managed directly by Homesteads Events, the company that runs the mill’s event spaces and has picked up WeddingWire’s Couples’ Choice Award in 2018 and 2019. Bar service and bar packages are available through the same team, so food and drink run through one vendor relationship rather than several.

On-site parking is available, the space is wheelchair accessible, and the courtyard and saltwater pool give guests somewhere to be outdoors during cocktail hour before moving back into the Grand Hall. With 189 loft apartments in the building, out-of-town guests have a real option to book a stay steps from the reception rather than driving in from a hotel.

Location & Getting There

Gastonia sits about 30 minutes south of downtown Charlotte, and the mill anchors the Loray Mill Historic District, a National Register district of 649 contributing buildings listed in 2001 with a boundary increase in 2006, so the neighborhood around the venue is part of the same preserved industrial fabric as the building itself.

Inside the Grand Hall, the 38-foot ceilings and hard brick and timber surfaces are the defining acoustic fact of the room: a space this tall and this hard-surfaced carries and reflects sound more than a carpeted ballroom would, so a DJ setup here gets tuned for that reverb, aiming speakers to control it rather than just push volume into an already resonant room, while the Tap House’s smaller, boiler-room footprint plays much more contained for a rehearsal dinner or after-party.
