The Space

The barn at Little Herb House started life in the early 1970s as an airplane hangar built to house a small plane, before it was converted into a 20-stall horse barn with an indoor riding arena. That working history is still visible in the original barn wood on the walls, now hung with Mason jar pendant lights and curly willow woven with twinkle lights, so the reception space reads as a real barn that was repurposed, not a new building built to look like one.

Lisa and Craig Treadaway bought the farm in 1996 and spent about a decade running it as an herb and flower business before friends asked to use the barn for a wedding ceremony, which is how the venue side of the property started. The 10,000-square-foot display garden they planted for that business, eight herbal themes connected by gravel paths, is still there and still functions as a ceremony backdrop or a cocktail-hour wander for your guests.

Capacity & Layout

The venue lists up to 250 guests seated and standing, which puts it at the larger end for a farm venue, and the barn itself measures 6,000 square feet with an 18 by 18 foot dance floor built into the plan. At full capacity that dance floor is a small piece of a much bigger room, so couples aiming for a packed dance floor rather than a scattered one should talk through table layout early rather than defaulting to the venue’s largest configuration.

What sets the rental apart is the length: it runs the entire weekend, 9am Friday to 5pm Sunday, not a single evening. That window means setup, rehearsal, and teardown do not have to compete with each other on the same clock, and a rehearsal dinner or Sunday morning gathering can happen on site without booking a second location. The 20-acre pasture, with its 100-year-old oak trees, is the other ceremony option beyond the gardens and ponds.

Amenities

A furnished two-bedroom, two-bathroom guest house serves as the bridal suite, giving the wedding party a full house to get ready in rather than a single room, and a groom’s room is available separately. Two ponds sit on the property: a three-acre natural pond fed by underground springs, and a smaller landscaped pond with a waterfall, floating lily pads, and a stone bridge, either of which can serve as a ceremony backdrop distinct from the pasture or garden.

The venue provides day-of coordination and keeps a list of recommended vendors, which is useful groundwork if you are building a vendor team from scratch. The venue sits on a working farm property in Raleigh, reachable by car with parking handled by an attendant on event days, and the grounds are accessible to guests with disabilities. Outside vendors are allowed, and the venue requires liability insurance, both standard for a property this size with multiple outdoor ceremony sites spread across pasture, garden, and pond.

Because the booking covers a full weekend, out-of-town guests and wedding parties get more flexibility with travel than a single-day rental allows. Indoors, the barn’s original wood and open riding-arena proportions give a DJ setup a live, resonant room with a defined dance floor rather than an open sprawl, while outdoor ceremonies at the pasture or ponds call for a more directional sound setup, so speaker placement gets planned differently for the barn reception than for a ceremony under the oak trees.
