The Space
Linwood Country Club’s golf course opened in March 1921 with a tournament and a cornerstone laying, on a property that originally ran over 250 acres across ten separate tracts. The clubhouse, built of hollow tile coated in white stucco with a green roof and turrets, has survived a Depression-era closure, a 1943 reopening by 34 members who bought it back for $23,500, and a 2017 purchase by the Dougherty family, owners of Dock’s Oyster House and Knife & Fork Inn in Atlantic City.
That most recent ownership brought a renovated bridal suite, a movable glass wall anchored by a double-sided fireplace, and updated lighting to the banquet room, so the historic building now pairs its original character with contemporary event finishes. The Grand Ballroom itself runs 5,500 square feet, expanded from the original dining room in a 1971 renovation that doubled its size, and arched windows there frame views of the golf course, the bay, and the Atlantic City skyline.
Capacity & Layout
The Grand Ballroom seats up to 300 guests, making it the club’s primary reception space, while smaller rooms round out the property: the Hearth Ballroom for up to 75 seated or 100 standing, and the Skyline Terrace for up to 50 seated or 75 standing. That range means a couple can match room to guest count directly, from an intimate Hearth Ballroom dinner to a full 300-guest Grand Ballroom reception, without renting more room than the wedding needs.
Glass accordion doors connect the Grand Ballroom to a tented outdoor patio with water views, so the room can open up for cocktail hour or close for a formal seated dinner depending on the couple’s plan and the weather. The bridal suite, recently renovated, connects to the Grand Ballroom by its own staircase, which keeps the wedding party’s staging area close to the reception without a long walk across the building.
Amenities
Full bar service runs throughout the property, and Shay’s Bar & Restaurant and Fox Den, both open to the public day to day, give the club a working food and beverage operation behind any private event. The double-sided fireplace anchoring the movable glass wall is a genuine architectural feature rather than a rented prop, and it sits at the center of the room where a couple might place a head table or first dance.
The 110-acre property still runs as an active golf club with a driving range, pro shop, and tennis courts, so a wedding weekend here can include a round of golf or practice time for guests who play, something not every banquet venue can offer alongside the reception itself. The arched windows throughout the ballroom keep the bay and skyline views present through the meal rather than only during cocktail hour on the terrace.
Location & Getting There
Linwood Country Club sits in Linwood, New Jersey, on the mainland side of the back bays that separate the mainland from Absecon Island, with the Atlantic City skyline visible across the water from the clubhouse itself. That water-and-skyline view is the property’s defining feature for guests arriving from the Jersey Shore or Philadelphia, and the club’s century of continuous operation makes it an established, easy-to-find address in the area.
With the Grand Ballroom’s arched windows and solid clubhouse construction, hollow tile and stucco built to last since 1921, a DJ gets a proper enclosed room with real acoustic control, and the option to open the glass accordion doors to the tented patio when a couple wants the reception to spill outdoor toward the water view without losing the contained sound of the indoor space.
