The Space
The Leslie-Alford Mims House is a Greek Revival mansion built in 1840 by Scottish tailor Archibald Leslie as a wedding gift for his bride Isabelle Rogers. The original two-story frame dwelling features a two-tier, pedimented Doric order entrance portico characteristic of Greek Revival architecture. Additions and modifications around 1876 and 1900 incorporated Colonial Revival design elements, creating a house of evolving architectural interest. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Restored and reopened as a venue in 2014 by Brooke Everhart and Priscilla Erwin, the house combines authentic historic character with modern event capabilities.
The property spans more than an acre of land with mature Magnolia trees, providing natural ceremony backdrops and shade for outdoor gatherings. The house contains twenty-four rooms and over seven thousand square feet of space, offering multiple indoor configurations and breakout areas. The setting blends Southern historic architecture, intimate scale, and graceful landscaping, appealing to couples seeking an established, rooted venue with authentic period character.
Capacity & Layout
The venue accommodates up to 200 guests. The ballroom serves as the primary reception space with period finishes and original hardwood floors. Bridal and groom’s suites provide private preparation areas with modern amenities (Hollywood-style lighting in the bridal salon). A children’s room and doggie room accommodate families’ needs. The event lawn extends outside, with tent capability for weather contingency. An oversized porte cochere (originally designed for horse and carriages) can function as an additional dance floor, creating flexible space configurations.
Ceremony options include the event lawn under open sky or beneath Magnolia trees, or the side portico with portico columns framing the bride. A secret staircase behind a bookshelf leads to a third-floor apartment with two bedrooms and full bath, adding unique storytelling and privacy options. The twenty-four rooms allow bridal parties to use separate spaces and guests to explore the historic home’s interior.
Amenities
Private bridal suite equipped with bar cart and Hollywood-style lighting for hair and makeup. Private groom’s suite for wedding party preparation. Ballroom with original hardwood floors and period architectural details. Children’s room for young guests. Doggie room for pets. On-site parking available. Wheelchair accessibility accommodated. Tent capability for the event lawn provides weather contingency for outdoor receptions or ceremonies.
The property’s Magnolia trees and landscape provide natural photography backdrop throughout. The historic architectural details, from the Doric portico to the Colonial Revival additions, create authentic period setting requiring minimal additional decoration. The oversized porte cochere can host cocktail service or serve as an open dance floor. Multiple rooms allow events to spread naturally: ceremony on the lawn, cocktails in garden areas, dinner in ballroom, dancing on the porte cochere or in the ballroom.
Location & Getting There
Holly Springs, North Carolina, on more than one acre of land, approximately twenty-five minutes south of Raleigh and twenty-seven minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport. The rural setting with mature trees and rolling landscape contrasts with Raleigh’s proximity, offering country atmosphere with city accessibility. Local roads provide direct access; the setting is quiet and private while remaining near major markets and transportation.
The ballroom’s original hardwood floors and period interior provide natural sound absorption from hard surfaces (wood, plaster, existing fixtures), creating warm acoustics ideal for DJ equipment and music. The oversized porte cochere’s solid floor and open sides function as a covered dance area, while the high ceilings within the historic house allow speaker mounting and lighting setup. The intimate scale of the ballroom (compared to modern-built wedding venues) requires careful speaker placement but rewards with natural elegance and the historic space’s inherent acoustic character.
