The Space
The Laboratory Mill is a working 1887 cotton mill on the South Fork of the Catawba River, four miles outside Lincolnton, restored over five and a half years after John and Cyndi Dellinger found it abandoned on a walk along the Carolina Thread Trail in 2007. Original hardwood floors, exposed heart pine beams, and distressed brick walls carried through the restoration, so the building still reads as an industrial mill rather than a purpose-built hall dressed up to look old.
The mill totals 23,103 square feet across multiple levels, with two separate upstairs rooms built specifically for ceremony and reception, divided only by curtains that can be drawn back to join them into one continuous space. Downstairs, a Cardroom and additional gathering areas give a couple more room to spread out cocktail hour or a rehearsal dinner without crowding the main event floors, and large windows throughout keep the river visible from inside.
Capacity & Layout
Seated capacity runs to 475 and standing events can hold up to 500, numbers that put this mill in range for a large wedding without feeling like a warehouse when the guest count is smaller, since the curtain-divided upstairs rooms let a couple close off unused footage rather than seating 150 people in a hall built for 500. The mill only hosts one wedding per day, so there is no back-to-back turnover pressure on setup or teardown timing.
Because the ceremony and reception rooms sit next to each other upstairs, guests do not need to relocate between floors or buildings for cocktail hour, they simply move through the curtain divide while the room behind them is reset. The Get Ready Suite gives the wedding party a dedicated space to prepare on site rather than arriving already dressed, and staff handle table setup and standard cleanup themselves, one less logistics item for a couple to manage on the day itself.
Amenities
The building runs on a new 70-ton HVAC system and a new standing-seam metal roof, both installed during the restoration, so despite the industrial exterior the interior stays climate controlled year-round rather than depending on open windows or portable units. Two separate kitchens support catering regardless of whether a couple uses a preferred caterer or brings in an outside one for an additional fee, and ADA compliant entrances and restrooms were part of the same renovation.
Bar service comes with bartending staff provided by the venue, and the outdoor space adjacent to the trees along the river gives an option for cocktail hour or portraits outside the main mill structure. The building carries protective covenants held by Preservation North Carolina, reflecting its status as a restored historic structure rather than a newly built venue made to look old, and that history is visible throughout in the brick and original wood.
Location & Getting There
The mill sits on 2.579 acres about four miles from downtown Lincolnton, fifteen minutes from both Interstate 40 and Interstate 85 by way of Highway 321, and roughly 30 minutes from Charlotte Douglas Airport, an easy pull for guests flying in from out of town. The South Fork of the Catawba River, which once powered the mill’s original water wheel, still runs alongside the property and is visible from the upstairs windows.
We have worked a wedding at the Laboratory Mill, and the acoustics of an old brick mill with high ceilings and hard surfaces carry sound differently than a hotel ballroom: the vaulted upstairs rooms with exposed beams give music room to breathe without a low ceiling flattening it, but hard floors and brick walls mean levels need attention so the room stays lively without turning boomy once dancing starts and the curtain divide between ceremony and reception rooms is drawn back.
