The Space
Long before it was a museum, this Georgian house on the Sampit River waterfront in downtown Georgetown was a private residence. Merchant Paul Trapier built it in 1769, and it stayed in family hands until Harold and Julia Kaminski bought it in 1931; Julia willed it to the city in 1972. The single-house plan, one room deep with a central hall and a colonnaded piazza on the north side, gives the property its distinct silhouette on the street.
The grounds carry as much weight as the house itself. Large oak trees shade a lawn that opens toward the water, and the Kossove Terrace looks out over the Sampit River. Next door stands the Stewart-Parker House, dating to around 1740, so the property actually holds two historic homes side by side. Georgetown’s Harborwalk runs along the edge of the grounds, putting the river and the town within view of any gathering held here.
Capacity & Layout
The property is rated for up to 300 guests, which in practice means the lawn and terrace, not the house interior, carry the party. The house itself is furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques and run as a museum, so it functions as a backdrop and a photo location rather than as reception space; couples plan their layout around the outdoor grounds from the start.
That outdoor-first layout puts the ceremony on the oak-shaded lawn and the reception on the Kossove Terrace, with the river as the constant backdrop for both. Because food and drink are kept out of the historic house and welcomed instead on the lawn and in the garden, catering, bar, and dance floor all end up outside, and a tent becomes the practical answer for weather backup rather than an indoor fallback room.
Amenities
Parking in downtown Georgetown is complimentary street parking, which is worth building into the day’s timeline since it is not a dedicated lot. The museum is listed on the National Register as part of the Georgetown Historic District, and it is run by the nonprofit Friends of the Kaminski House in partnership with the city, so the venue carries an unusually documented, protected history for a wedding backdrop.
Regular museum hours run 10am to 5pm Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday, which is useful context for planning setup and vendor access around the property’s normal operating rhythm. We have worked a wedding at the Kaminski House and know the outdoor layout, so we plan sound placement and cable runs around the terrace and lawn rather than assuming an indoor stage exists.
Location & Getting There
The museum sits in downtown Georgetown, South Carolina, on the waterfront, about 60 miles north of Charleston, close enough for out of town guests to combine the wedding with a coastal weekend. Being downtown puts the venue within walking distance of the rest of Georgetown’s historic district, so guests staying nearby can arrive on foot rather than needing a shuttle.
Because the ceremony and reception both happen outdoors on the lawn and terrace rather than inside the antique-filled house, sound has to travel across open grass and water rather than bounce off walls, so we run weather-ready speakers and keep announcements clear against the ambient river air instead of relying on any indoor room to carry the mix.
