The Space
The Hotel DuPont opened on January 15, 1913, commissioned by DuPont Company president Pierre S. du Pont as one of the most lavish hotels of the Gilded Age, built to rival the finest hotels of both New York City and Europe’s capitals. French and Italian craftsmen spent two and a half years finishing the 12-story Italian Renaissance building, and in its first week alone, 25,000 visitors toured the rooms to see the rich woodwork, terrazzo floors, handcrafted chandeliers, and gilded hallways for themselves, a level of public curiosity that says something about how far the finish work stood out even in 1913.
A 1918 expansion added the Gold Ballroom, the Du Barry Room, and the DuPont Theatre, turning a single grand hotel into a complex with several distinct event spaces that are still in active use more than a century later. The property has been a member of Historic Hotels of America since 1989, and a couple marrying here is working inside rooms built with the same craftsmanship that drew those first 25,000 visitors through the door.
Capacity & Layout
Seated capacity runs up to 400 guests across more than 25,000 square feet of event space, split between two grand ballrooms and 11 private dining rooms, plus dedicated conference facilities. That range means a couple can host a full reception in one of the ballrooms or move a smaller rehearsal dinner or family gathering into one of the ornate private dining rooms without the room ever feeling like an afterthought.
The scale here is built for flexibility rather than a single fixed layout, so a wedding with 150 guests and a wedding with 400 guests are both accommodated by choosing the right combination of ballroom and dining rooms rather than shrinking or stretching one space to fit. Dedicated conference facilities also give a couple somewhere separate to run a rehearsal or a next-day brunch without touching the rooms used the night before.
Amenities
Two hundred and seventeen guest rooms and suites mean the wedding party and traveling guests can stay in the same building where the ceremony and reception happen, no shuttle required between hotel and venue. On-site dining includes Le Cavalier, a progressive French restaurant, and Le Cav brasserie, along with two bars for cocktail hour and the reception itself.
The hotel offers on-site catering, full disabled access, valet parking at the entrance with self-parking also available at the nearby Orange Street garage, and a full-service spa with facials, massages, and manicure and pedicure services for a wedding party getting ready the morning of. The property is also pet-friendly, allowing pets up to 30 pounds with a $100 maintenance fee and a required traveling kennel, useful for a couple who would rather not board a dog for the weekend.
Location & Getting There
The hotel sits in downtown Wilmington, an entirely indoor venue, which means a couple does not need a rain plan or a tent contingency built into their timeline. Guests arriving from out of town land in a walkable downtown setting rather than a rural property requiring a drive to reach dinner or a nightcap afterward, and the Historic Hotels of America listing gives out-of-town guests an easy way to picture what they are booking before they arrive.
We have worked a reception in one of the hotel’s grand ballrooms, and the terrazzo floors and tall, ornate ceilings carry sound well across a large seated crowd, giving a DJ room to fill the space for dancing without needing to push volume past what the room’s hard, reflective surfaces already return.
