The Space
The parish that became Church of the Holy Trinity started small, in the spring of 1938, when Father Margerum of Saint Bernard’s Church in Raritan began holding Sunday Mass in the basement of the Tolbirt family’s home in Bradley Gardens. When furnace trouble made that arrangement impossible, Mass moved to the Bradley Gardens Volunteer Fire House, a practical solution that carried the young community until it could build a church of its own.
That church held its first Mass in 1949 and was officially blessed in 1950, with the rectory completed in 1952. The building was extended in 1985 and 1986, when architects Moran and Karlberg doubled the original seating capacity of 225 and added a new liturgical sanctuary along with classrooms, a project that shaped the church much as it stands today, decades after the Tolbirt family first opened their basement to their neighbors. That expansion matters for a couple planning a wedding here: the sanctuary a bride walks into today is roughly twice the size of the one the original congregation built in 1949, giving a larger guest list room to be seated comfortably rather than overflowing a smaller, older space.
Capacity & Layout
The sanctuary itself holds the altar, baptismal font, crucifix, and tabernacle around which a Catholic wedding ceremony is built, along with a holy oil door that speaks to the church’s regular sacramental use beyond weddings alone. A choir loft sits above, and the property includes a grotto on the grounds, a quieter spot for photos or a private moment before or after the ceremony.
For couples marrying at Holy Trinity, the ceremony itself takes place in the church sanctuary, the space the parish has used for Mass since 1949 and expanded specifically to hold more people in the 1985-86 renovation. A vestibule with multiple doors serves as the entry point, the space where a wedding party typically gathers before processing in.
Amenities
Receptions have a home on the same property: the parish center, whose 1967 groundbreaking was specifically aimed at providing affordable wedding receptions for parishioners, alongside youth activities and diocesan seminarian events over the years. That dual purpose, sacred space for the ceremony and a separate hall for the celebration after, means a couple marrying here is not choosing between a church wedding and an on-site reception, they can have both without leaving the property.
Parking is available on an expanded lot, purchased from the neighboring Lucash property specifically to serve the growing parish, so guests are not left hunting for street parking in a residential area before the ceremony. As part of the Diocese of Metuchen, Holy Trinity marked its Golden Anniversary in 1998 and its 75th anniversary in 2023, milestones that mark a parish still active in the same Bradley Gardens community where it started in a family’s basement nearly ninety years ago.
Location & Getting There
Holy Trinity sits in Bridgewater, New Jersey, serving the Bradley Gardens, Bridgewater, and Branchburg area within the Diocese of Metuchen, a location that keeps the parish central to the same community it has served since 1938.
For sound, a church sanctuary built and later expanded for a full congregation carries a ceremony’s music and vows clearly on its own, with hard surfaces and volume built for a full room, while any reception music moves next door to the parish center, a separate hall built specifically to host receptions apart from the sanctuary itself.
