The Space

The name Lumina goes back to 1905, when a pavilion of the same name stood at the end of Wrightsville Beach’s trolley line, lit by more than a thousand incandescent bulbs and bright enough that sailors reportedly used it to navigate offshore. That pavilion held a dance hall, a bowling alley, and a movie theater before Hurricane Hazel damaged it in 1954 and it was eventually torn down in 1973. The resort that carries the name today opened as a Holiday Inn in 1952 and was fully reimagined, reopening as Lumina on Wrightsville Beach on June 21, 2022.

That history shapes the feel of the place: this is an oceanfront resort built to be a destination in its own right, not just a hotel with a ballroom attached. The 2022 renovation, led by design firm DLR Group, touched the whole property, and the result is a seven-story, 184-room resort sitting directly on the beach rather than a set of event rooms with a view of the water from a distance.

Capacity & Layout

For the wedding itself, the Lumina Ballroom is the room built to hold a full reception, with capacity up to 400 guests, while Turtlewatch, an oceanfront meeting room, holds up to 150 for a smaller gathering with water views built in rather than borrowed. Between the two, a couple has real flexibility to match the room to the guest list instead of squeezing a modest wedding into an oversized ballroom or the reverse.

Altogether the resort carries 8,396 square feet of conference and event space, plus an oceanfront event lawn and beach access for a ceremony with sand underfoot rather than a hotel garden standing in for the beach. Indoor backup exists across the ballroom and meeting rooms if weather turns, so an oceanfront ceremony does not have to be a single-weather gamble on a barrier island.

Amenities

On site, the resort runs three restaurants: Solstice Oceanfront Kitchen and Cocktails, Surfside Beach Bar and Grille, which is seasonal and runs April through September, and Longboard Coffee and Market for something quicker. Three pools and two hot tubs give a wedding weekend somewhere for guests to gather outside the formal events, and a beachfront fitness center with ocean views covers anyone keeping to a routine during the trip.

With 184 rooms and suites, many with ocean or bay views and private balconies, most of the guest list can stay on property for the whole weekend rather than driving in for the ceremony. Parking is covered, with a two-level deck offering one spot per room included in the resort fee, and ten Tesla charging stations are available for guests driving electric.

Location & Getting There

Wilmington International Airport sits about 10 miles away, an easy trip for guests flying in rather than driving the coast, and the resort’s ten accessible rooms, accessible meeting spaces, and ADA-compliant elevators make it workable for a wedding party with guests who need step-free routes throughout the property. The resort operates year-round, so a couple weighing an off-season date against a peak-summer one has that flexibility on the calendar.

For sound, Turtlewatch and the Lumina Ballroom sit inside a resort rebuilt from the ground up in 2022, which means modern acoustic treatment and flexible layouts rather than the awkward angles of an older, unrenovated ballroom, with the beach itself outside as the natural, open-air option for a ceremony that needs no amplification at all.
