The Space

High Meadows sits in the Blue Ridge Mountains at Roaring Gap, on land that traces back to 1770, when the Smith family of Norfolk, Virginia first settled the property, on ground that had been Cherokee hunting territory before that. The original Smith house is gone, but its chimney has been preserved and can still be seen from the golf course today, a small, real piece of the site’s history sitting inside a modern country club.

The clubhouse itself was completed in 1966 by architect Claus R. Moberg and positioned directly over the 18th green with a view of the lake, which means a reception here comes with that view built in rather than added on. We worked a wedding at High Meadows once already, and the layered history of the place, incorporated in 1964 as what almost became Alleghany Heights, gives the club a settled, storied feel rather than a purpose-built event hall.

Capacity & Layout

The Main Dining Room seats 180 guests for a plated dinner and can hold up to 400 for a standing reception with passed hors d’oeuvres, which gives couples real flexibility depending on the format they want. A seated dinner for a mid-size guest list fits comfortably, while a larger, more mingling-style reception can stretch the same room significantly further without needing an outside tent.

Beyond the Main Dining Room, the property includes The Grille, Dogwood Dining, and an upscale bar as additional food and drink spaces, which matters for a wedding weekend that might include a rehearsal dinner or a welcome gathering in a different room than the main reception itself. Having multiple dining venues on one property means the whole weekend can stay in one location rather than couples booking separate spaces around town.

Amenities

High Meadows carries the full footprint of a country club: two hard-surface tennis courts, four pickleball courts, a heated swimming pool, a fitness center, and a splash pad, plus a trout pond and a playground. For a destination-style wedding weekend where guests arrive a day or two early, that range of amenities gives people something to do beyond sitting in a hotel room waiting for the ceremony to start.

The golf course itself, designed by George Cobb in 1964 and renovated by John LaFoy in 1985, plays to 6,625 yards and a par of 72, and Daniel Boone is said to have once camped near the stream that still runs through the course. None of that changes the reception directly, but it is the kind of texture that gives out-of-town guests something to talk about between the ceremony and the toasts.

Location & Getting There

Roaring Gap sits at over 3,000 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountains, which means guests traveling up from the Piedmont should plan for a real change in elevation and temperature, especially for a warm-weather wedding where the mountain air runs noticeably cooler than it does down in Charlotte or Winston-Salem. The drive itself, up into the mountains, is part of what sets the tone for a High Meadows wedding before guests even arrive.

With the Main Dining Room enclosed and positioned over the 18th green, sound for the reception stays contained inside a real indoor room even though the view outside is entirely open mountain scenery, which gives a DJ the best of both: a controlled indoor space to set levels in at the clubhouse, with the option to let music spill out toward the lake view and open golf course beyond it as the night goes on.
