The Space

Brothers Don and Jake Black built Heyward Manor themselves on their family’s 650-acre tree farm, Charlie’s Creek Nursery, which their father Heyward Black Sr. had founded in 1985. The first wedding at the venue took place on April 13, 2019, and the bride was Don’s own daughter, who had grown up on the farm, a detail that runs through the whole property’s origin rather than sitting off to the side as backstory.

The venue takes its name from Heyward Black Sr., who attended his granddaughter’s wedding there and passed away two weeks later, and that naming gives the white barn a weight beyond its cedar beams and chandeliers. Inside, the barn mixes natural cedar with whitewashed walls, three large windows across the front, French doors down both sides, and a row of windows at the back that pull light through the whole room.

Capacity & Layout

The indoor barn holds up to 400 seated guests for a ceremony, and published figures put seated dinner capacity at 350 to 400 with room for 450 standing, numbers that put Heyward Manor toward the larger end of the venues in this area. The property sits on over 900 acres of working tree nursery, so the barn itself is only one part of a much larger working landscape a couple can draw on for photos.

Outdoors, two covered areas strung with lights flank both sides of the barn, connected to a patio finished in grey pavers, and a circular hydrangea garden with a rope swing sits by the natural lake on the property. That gives a couple a real sequence of spaces to move through across a wedding day: barn for the ceremony or dinner, covered patios for cocktails, and the lakeside garden for photos.

Amenities

The bridal suite occupies the second floor with its own balcony overlooking the manor, while the groom’s suite sits at the back of the building furnished with antique pieces and an original Colorado elk hide, each with a private restroom among the four on site. A hidden commercial catering kitchen, with its own separate access, heating and air conditioning, and built-in speakers, keeps food service running without cutting through guest space.

Ample on-site parking includes a roundabout for drop-offs, useful given the scale of a property spread across a working tree nursery. Peak season runs April through December, and with the barn, covered outdoor areas, patio, and lakeside garden all included in the property, a couple is choosing from several settings within one booking rather than paying to add each one separately.

Heyward Manor sits in Iva, South Carolina, about an hour from Greenville and roughly two hours from the Atlanta airport, a real drive for out-of-town guests but one that arrives at 900 acres of tree farm rather than a roadside lot.

With natural cedar beams and whitewashed walls inside the barn and built-in speakers already wired into the room, the space is set up to carry sound cleanly through a room built specifically for events, while the covered outdoor areas on either side give a DJ a quieter option for cocktail hour before the crowd moves back inside for dancing.
