The Space

The Boyd Foundation Horticultural Center is a genuinely new building, completed in the winter of 2022 on the historic grounds of the Hampton-Preston Mansion, which itself dates to 1818. The greenhouse is a three-quarter span glass house that runs the full length of the structure, joining a production greenhouse, a central orientation lobby, and an interpretive greenhouse into one connected facility, with a hexagonal gatehouse rebuilt to match a structure that stood on the property until the 1940s.

A greenhouse has stood on this site in some form since at least 1861, documented in an old issue of The Farmer and Planter and again on an 1872 birds-eye map of Columbia, and writer E.T.H. Schaffer described a large greenhouse against the south wall of the house as late as 1937. The current building is a modern reconstruction of that lineage, glass and light-filled rather than a converted historic structure, sitting on 14 acres that Historic Columbia maintains as gardens.

Capacity & Layout

The grounds break into two connected zones for an event: the greenhouse itself, with its long glass span and interpretive lobby, and roughly three acres of surrounding formal garden that includes magnolias and live oaks, pergolas, a gazebo, a fountain garden, and a sunken patio with recessed lighting. That gives a couple a choice between a glass-enclosed reception and an outdoor ceremony a short walk apart on the same property.

No published guest capacity is listed for the greenhouse rental space, so a couple weighing a large guest list against the size of the glass house and garden should confirm exact numbers directly with Historic Columbia. What is clear from the layout is that the site works both indoors and outdoors, which gives flexibility if weather changes the plan on short notice.

Amenities

The garden’s built features do a lot of the decorating work on their own: a sunken patio with recessed lighting, a gazebo, and a fountain garden give a couple several distinct backdrops without needing to bring in additional structure. The mature magnolias and live oaks provide shade and a sense of age that a newly built greenhouse alone would not.

Because the greenhouse is a working horticultural and educational facility as well as a rental space, the plantings inside are maintained year-round rather than staged for events, which means the backdrop looks the same whether a couple tours it in July or books a date in December. We worked an event on these grounds and the mix of glass house and garden gave the evening two distinct settings within a short walk of each other.

Location & Getting There

The site sits on the historic Hampton-Preston Mansion property, purchased by Wade Hampton I in 1823 from original builder Ainsley Hall, and the grounds are now owned by Richland County and managed by Historic Columbia as a public garden and museum campus. That puts the venue inside Columbia’s downtown historic district rather than on the outskirts of the city.

Guests arriving for a wedding are walking into a working museum garden, with the mansion, the arboretums, and the Boyd greenhouse all connected by garden paths rather than parking-lot distances. Inside the greenhouse, the glass walls and hard tile floors carry sound differently than the open lawn does, so a DJ setup there has to account for both the reflective, enclosed acoustics of the glass house and the more absorbent, open feel of the garden if the event moves between the two.
