The Space

This building started life in 1871 as the Thomas A. Willson & Co. factory, the first company in the United States to manufacture optical lenses, and it went on to produce the shatterproof safety goggles the plant became known for after Willson patented a glass-hardening process in 1876. By 1943 the factory was making every pair of sunglasses issued to the U.S. Military during World War II, running at its peak with 1,300 workers on the floor.

The plant closed in 2002 after 130 years of manufacturing, and three years later, in 2005, Albert Boscov, Marlin Miller, and Irv Cohen reopened it as GoggleWorks Center for the Arts. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006, and today the complex spans 145,000 square feet across five stories, a scale that still reads as an old industrial factory even with galleries and studios filling the floors.

Capacity & Layout

A rental here seats up to 215 guests, and event end times are built into the venue’s own rules: baby showers wrap by 8pm, other events by 10pm, with a $70-per-hour security fee kicking in after 9pm. The complex holds the Cohen Gallery at 6,000 square feet and the climate-controlled Schmidt Gallery at 1,500 square feet, either of which could anchor a reception depending on the guest count and the look a couple wants.

Beyond the galleries, the building holds eight teaching studios covering ceramics, hot and warm glass, metalsmithing, photography, printmaking, woodworking, and virtual reality, plus 35 juried artist studios and office space for more than 40 cultural organizations. Decorating comes with real restrictions worth planning around: no confetti, glitter, fog machines, bubbles, birdseed, or duct tape, and anything hung from the ceiling has to attach to the I-beams or the wooden ceiling itself, not the walls.

Amenities

Thorn Alley Kitchen, a full-service restaurant with its own bar, opened inside GoggleWorks on April 10, 2026, giving couples an on-site food and drink option tied directly to the building rather than an outside caterer trucking everything in. The Boscov Film Theatre seats 130 to 131 people and runs art house films daily, more a curiosity than a wedding amenity, but it says something about how much is packed into this one complex.

Parking is free behind the building, and the venue is fully wheelchair accessible and stroller-friendly with elevators running the full five stories, useful at a property this size where guests could otherwise be facing a lot of stairs. General admission and parking are always free to the public, and the building is open daily from 9am to 9pm outside of private event hours.

Location & Getting There

GoggleWorks sits in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania, spanning nearly a full city block, which puts it closer to restaurants and hotels than a rural or suburban venue would be. The center draws over 250,000 visitors a year for its galleries, studios, and public programming alone, so a wedding here is sharing the building with an active, working arts campus rather than a space that sits empty between private bookings.

We worked a wedding at GoggleWorks and can speak to what the rooms actually do to sound. This is a converted industrial building with hard floors and high factory ceilings throughout much of the complex, which means a DJ setup needs to account for a lot of natural reverberation, very different from a carpeted ballroom, and speaker placement matters more here than it would in a softer, more contained room.
