The Space
George K’s traces back to a Greek immigrant named George Kourtsounis, who opened his first restaurant at the University Motel on Market Street in downtown Greensboro back in 1990. Success outgrew that original space, and in March 1999 the business relocated to its current 21,000-square-foot location near the corner of High Point and Holden roads, close to the mall, shifting from a standalone restaurant toward a dedicated catering and banquet operation.
The business has stayed in the family since: George Kourtsounis Jr. runs the operation as general manager, and his brother Peter serves as executive chef, meaning the same family that opened a small restaurant in 1990 is still cooking and running events at the much larger facility today. That continuity shows up in the catering itself, made fresh from scratch on site rather than trucked in, with a 20 percent operational fee calculated from the food subtotal.
Capacity & Layout
The signature room is the Sky Room, the venue’s largest banquet hall, with a hand-painted blue domed ceiling scattered with fluffy clouds overhead, a space built to serve as both ceremony and reception site. Total capacity across the building runs up to 400 seated in the main space and as high as 600 when every room is combined, while the Sky Room alone is described as seating up to 250, giving a couple real room to scale a guest list up or down without changing venues.
Beyond the Sky Room, George K’s operates six additional private rooms across roughly 8,143 square feet of total meeting space: four Banquet Rooms seating 18 to 40 guests each, a 46-seat Rose Room, two Sky Room 2 Event Spaces seating 60 to 125 each, and an 18-seat GK Room. That range means a rehearsal dinner, a small ceremony, and a full reception can each land in a differently sized room within the same building rather than being squeezed into one space built for a single scale.
Amenities
Alcohol is permitted on the premises, a dance floor is available, and both internet access and event lighting are already part of the building’s standing infrastructure rather than add-ons a couple has to source separately for the day.
The venue has also built a real reputation over time: it won Best of Greensboro awards for both customer satisfaction and catering in 2011, and took Talk Awards for customer satisfaction nine years running through 2019.
Location & Getting There
George K’s sits near the corner of High Point Road and Holden Road in Greensboro, close enough to the mall that out-of-town guests have an easy landmark to navigate by, with complimentary parking available on site so arrival is simple even for a large wedding party. The building itself is wheelchair accessible, another piece of standing infrastructure rather than a special accommodation.
Because the Sky Room and its neighboring event spaces are enclosed, carpeted-and-finished banquet rooms rather than an open barn or an outdoor tent, sound stays contained and controllable: the domed ceiling gives the room some height to work with, but the finished walls and fixed room boundaries mean a DJ can set levels for a defined space rather than fighting open air or a room that bleeds into another one.
