The Space
Before it ever hosted a performance, this building on the Delaware River spent a century moving water. It was built in 1903 as Philadelphia’s High Pressure Fire Service pumping station, the first system of its kind anywhere, drawing from the river to supply more than 900 fire hydrants across downtown Philadelphia at 10,000 gallons a minute. That industrial scale is still legible in the brick and volume of the structure FringeArts now occupies, tucked beneath the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Old City.
FringeArts itself started in 1997 as the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, a monthlong citywide series staged in theaters, nightclubs, galleries and alleys long before the organization had a permanent address. It found one here in 2013, completing a $7 million renovation that turned the retired pumping station into a contemporary performance center. The building earned a Preservation Alliance award in 2015 for that adaptive reuse, and the festival it grew out of now fills Philadelphia each September with more than 1,000 performances.
Capacity & Layout
The main theater seats 300 and was built to be taken apart. Its interior walls roll, letting the room shift from a fixed, front-facing arrangement into immersive or in-the-round configurations depending on the event. For a wedding, that same adjustability applies directly: the black-box shell can open into one continuous floor for dinner and dancing, or be divided so a ceremony area sits apart from the reception that follows it, without a raised stage or bolted-down seating to work around.
Beyond the main theater, FringeArts includes a multipurpose studio and rehearsal space that can extend a program, whether that means a smaller ceremony, a rehearsal dinner, or overflow room alongside a larger reception. Administrative offices round out the building, but the footprint set up for events centers on the theater and the rooms next to it. We have run sound in this theater, and the reconfigured layout makes for a straightforward load-in whichever configuration the walls are set to.
Amenities
The building carries its own restaurant and bar rather than relying on an outside caterer for everything. Fringe Bar operates on site, and the Haas Biergarten adds an outdoor plaza beside the theater, so a couple has the option of an outdoor cocktail hour in the beer garden before moving guests inside for the ceremony or reception. That pairing gives a wedding here two distinct settings under one roof: the plaza for the informal stretch of the evening, the theater for the formal one.
FringeArts also builds accessibility into its regular operations rather than treating it as a special request. The venue is wheelchair accessible, and sign language interpretation, sensory-friendly formats and audio description are already part of how the organization runs its programming. For a couple with guests who need those accommodations, that groundwork already exists rather than needing to be arranged from scratch.
Location & Getting There
FringeArts sits directly on the Delaware River waterfront, under the Benjamin Franklin Bridge in Old City, on land that is part of Lenapehokink, the ancestral territory of the Lenape people. That puts it a short walk from the historic core of Philadelphia rather than in a stand-alone banquet hall, so guests arriving from around the city or from out of town are walking into a waterfront pocket of downtown, with the bridge and river visible outside.
Parking is limited to street spaces along Columbus Boulevard and the surrounding blocks, with a partnered lot at Old City Parkominium as a backup for guests who would rather not circle for curb space. Inside, the room a DJ works in is the same reconfigurable black box: hard-surfaced and built for live performance, with rolling walls that can close the space in for a smaller crowd or open it fully for a full reception, so sound carries evenly whichever configuration the night is set to.
