It opened in October 2011 at 410,000 square feet, a $100 million investment, and was expanded by another 83,000 square feet in 2015 to add material-handling equipment, loading doors, and parking. This is an active logistics hub, not a venue, and any private event held here happens inside a working sort facility rather than a space designed for it.

The scale of the building comes from what it actually does: nearly 15 miles of conveyor belts move packages at 540 feet per minute, with processing capacity that started at 15,000 packages an hour and was planned to grow to 45,000. A facility engineered to handle that much automated equipment has enormous clear floor area and high ceilings, the same qualities that, incidentally, make large open industrial spaces workable for a big private gathering.

Capacity & Layout

The hub employed more than 550 full-time and part-time workers when it opened in 2011, growing to roughly 1,700 employees by 2021, plus hundreds of contract drivers. A building staffed and equipped at that scale has the square footage, at nearly half a million square feet, to set aside a genuinely large area for a private function without disrupting the sort operation running elsewhere in the same facility.

The 125-acre site also means ample outdoor space and parking around the building itself, since the property was designed to handle a large workforce’s daily arrival and a constant flow of delivery trucks. That kind of infrastructure, built for volume rather than aesthetics, translates into straightforward logistics for a large private event: parking is not the constraint it can be at a smaller, purpose-built venue.

Amenities

FedEx Ground does not run this facility as an events business, so there is no in-house catering, bar service, or decor to draw on, everything for a private gathering here is brought in by outside vendors, the same as any corporate event held inside an operating warehouse. What the building offers instead is scale and a genuine sense of place inside one of the larger logistics operations in this part of North Carolina.

The hub serves FedEx Ground’s network across eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia, and in March 2021 it became the company’s first facility for last-mile residential delivery of time-sensitive FedEx Express shipments, a distinction that marks it as an operationally significant site within the company rather than just another warehouse along the highway.
