The Space
Wendell Falls preserved a historic building at the center of its 1,100-acre community when it opened in 2015 on former tobacco farmland, and that building now houses Farmhouse Cafe, doubling as the neighborhood’s Welcome Center. The cafe sits at what is meant to function as the literal center of the community, rather than a stand-alone restaurant built off to the side.
Chef Patrick Cowden runs the kitchen, and his background carries real weight here: co-owner of the well-known Pharmacy Cafe in downtown Raleigh, a New England Culinary Institute graduate, and previously the owner of Green Planet Catering, the country’s first certified B-corp catering company. He has also cooked at Michael Jordan’s 23 Sport Cafe, the Grill at Glen Lennox, Jean Claude’s Cafe, and Tobacco Road Sports Cafe, and was a finalist in the state’s Best Dish of North Carolina competition.
Capacity & Layout
The cafe itself runs counter service, guests order at the counter and food comes out when it’s ready, which is worth knowing for anyone picturing a plated wedding dinner: this is a working cafe layout, not a banquet hall setup. For a larger gathering, the property’s Festival Lawn and historic tobacco barn are the spaces actually built for community events, sitting apart from the cafe’s own dining room and patio.
Seating splits between an indoor dining area and an outdoor patio with sunset views, giving guests a choice between the two depending on weather and time of day. Because no specific guest capacity is published for the cafe or the Festival Lawn, a couple planning an event here should treat it as a flexible, farm-community space shaped around the cafe’s regular hours and the barn’s open-air footprint rather than a fixed seating chart.
Amenities
The cafe already runs regular community food events, annual crawfish boils, oyster bakes and cookouts, plus live entertainment on Friday nights, so the property has real experience hosting a crowd on a set schedule. Catering is available both on-site and off-site, meaning Chef Cowden’s kitchen can serve an event either inside the Wendell Falls community or elsewhere, which is a useful option depending on where the actual wedding day is held.
Drink service includes beer and wine, and the food menu covers breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner and small plates, plus vegan and vegetarian options and specialty coffees, kombucha and brewed teas. The cafe also runs its own composting and recycling program with Green Shoots, using compostable cups, containers and cutlery throughout, a sustainability detail that carries through everything the kitchen serves rather than sitting apart as a separate initiative.
Location & Getting There
The Farmhouse sits inside Wendell Falls, a 1,100-acre community built on former tobacco farmland that opened in 2015, which means the cafe is reached by driving into a planned neighborhood rather than out to a rural stand-alone property. Regular hours run Monday through Saturday from 8am to 5pm and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with brunch service running the first several hours of each day.
Because the cafe’s indoor dining room, outdoor patio, and the separate Festival Lawn and tobacco barn are all different physical spaces with different surfaces, a DJ setting up for an event here needs to know in advance which space is in use: the barn’s open timber structure carries sound differently than the patio’s open sky, and both differ again from the cafe’s own indoor dining room.
