The Space

Emerald Lake Golf Club is an 18-hole public golf course on 88 acres centered around a 12-acre lake, designed by Gary Wirth and opened in 1996. The property features Crenshaw bent grass greens, one of the few Charlotte-area public courses with this premium grass type. The signature par-5 14th hole requires two shots over the water, making the lake a defining feature of the course. In summer 2020, the club hired Mike Stell as superintendent, formerly assistant superintendent at Quail Hollow Club, bringing top-level course management to the property.

The View, the event ballroom, was constructed in 2017 and sits at the edge of the course overlooking the 18th green. The 32-foot high stone gas fireplace and exposed beam ceiling with soaring pitched roof create an elegant, dramatic interior. The ballroom features six roll-up glass doors that disappear into the ceiling, transforming the space from fully enclosed to completely open-air. A built-in ceremony rain plan ensures outdoor plans can adapt if weather turns.

Capacity & Layout

The View ballroom spans 5,000 square feet and seats up to 225 guests. The 2,000 square-foot waterfront ceremony lawn sits on the water’s edge with a white pergola, overlooking both the lake and the 18th green. Bridal and grooms suites allow wedding parties to prepare on-site in privacy. An outdoor patio with two fire pits serves as a cocktail hour gathering space overlooking the 14th tee and 18th green.

Tables, chairs, and linens are included with the venue rental. Couples can choose white or mahogany chivari chairs for both ceremony and reception. The flexibility to open the ballroom’s six glass doors means you can host a cocktail hour outdoors and transition seamlessly indoors for dinner.

Amenities

The bridal suite includes a private bathroom for preparing on the day. The grooms suite features an oversized couch and 70-inch TV for the day-of comfort. Lake View Tavern, managed by Xenia Hospitality Group, handles catering and bar service. The restaurant serves craft cocktails and draft beers. Parking is available on-site.

The surrounding golf course gives the venue a private, estate-like setting despite being in suburban Matthews. Guests can explore the driving range and practice areas if the celebration extends multiple hours. The 88-acre property creates a sense of space and escape from the city, even though uptown Charlotte is roughly 15 minutes away.

Location & Getting There

Matthews is a suburb southeast of Charlotte, roughly 15 miles from Uptown Charlotte and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (20 minutes by car). The property sits in the rolling Piedmont landscape, with views of manicured fairways and natural wooded areas. The location is convenient for Charlotte guests and wedding parties while offering the peaceful feel of a private country club setting.

The View ballroom has hard walls and a stone fireplace, both of which reflect sound. The exposed beam ceiling and high pitch roof create natural acoustics that can amplify midrange frequencies. The six roll-up glass doors allow the space to open to the patio and lake, which reduces sound containment when fully opened but makes for a unique ceremony or cocktail hour setup. When the doors are closed, sound projects well throughout the 5,000-square-foot space. A DJ should plan to position equipment for the indoor configuration, as the rolling landscape outside offers few reflective surfaces for outdoor sound projection.
