The Space

In 1889, a college chartered by the Christian Church opened on land at Mill Point covered in massive oak trees, which is where its name comes from: Elon, the Hebrew word for oak. A fire on June 18, 1923 destroyed the school’s main building, taking the library, classrooms, chapel, and administrative offices with it, but the school, known then as Elon College, rebuilt immediately with five new buildings that still anchor central campus today as Elon University.

The Elon College Historic District and Johnston Hall are both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so the historic core of campus carries real weight alongside the university’s newer construction. In 2000 the school’s trustees approved the change from Elon College to Elon University, reflecting growth into a full university, and the 656-acre campus is designated as a botanical garden, a detail that shows up in the mature landscaping around its event spaces.

Capacity & Layout

Elon’s campus holds several distinct venues built for very different scales of event. The Schar Center, completed in 2018, seats 5,100 people across 160,000 square feet and hosts the university’s Division I basketball and volleyball teams alongside major convocations and speakers, while Rhodes Stadium seats 11,250 for football at McKinnon Field, both far larger than a typical wedding but available for events that call for that scale.

For a smaller, more traditional event, McCrary Theatre offers a 600-seat theater and concert hall, a size that reads far more like a wedding ceremony or reception space than the stadium or arena does. Across the 656-acre campus, seven distinct neighborhoods, including Historic Campus, Central Campus, and The Colonnades, each bring their own building stock and outdoor lawns, so the right room depends heavily on which part of campus a couple is working with.

Amenities

Because Elon is a university rather than a dedicated event venue, booking runs through the Office of Event and Space Management, which couples can reach directly to sort out room selection, availability, and what each specific building can support. The campus’s botanical garden designation means outdoor ceremony or photo locations are genuinely landscaped rather than incidental, and the 56-acre Elon University Forest and Loy Farm add a research-and-nature dimension not found on a typical wedding venue’s grounds.

Amenities vary building to building since the university maintains everything from the historic Alamance Building at the center of the quad to the modern Schar Center, so a couple should expect catering, AV, and setup details to be negotiated per venue rather than offered as one standard package. What stays constant is the setting: a campus three miles from Interstate 40/85, between Greensboro and Raleigh, with mature oak-lined grounds throughout.

Location & Getting There

The campus sits in North Carolina’s Piedmont region between Greensboro and Raleigh, about three miles from Interstate 40/85 and roughly five miles from Burlington, making it reasonably easy for out-of-town guests to reach by car. Elon’s enrollment of more than 6,400 undergraduates keeps the town feeling active without being a large city, which fits a wedding weekend that wants some restaurant and hotel infrastructure nearby without a downtown-scale crowd.

Sound behaves very differently depending on which Elon venue a couple books: McCrary Theatre is a built concert hall with acoustics tuned for live performance, the Schar Center is a large arena where sound needs real coverage to reach the back rows, and an outdoor lawn ceremony on the historic quad has no walls at all to work with, so a DJ has to plan equipment and placement around whichever specific space is booked rather than a single standard setup.
