The Space

Double Oaks is the Harden Thomas Martin House, a 1909 Colonial Revival mansion built for a Rockingham County merchant who retired to Greensboro and later developed real estate in the city. The house was designed by G. Will Armfield, North Carolina’s first registered architect (certificate 1 issued May 15, 1915), and is the only known residential design Armfield created. The mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and has been carefully preserved and restored.

The architecture is refined and formal: a bowed, two-story Ionic portico welcomes guests, and the interior features a grand split-run staircase with original molded plaster ceilings and eight original fireplaces throughout. The property includes a parlor, library, center hall, drawing room with a player piano, music parlor, and individual dining spaces. A wraparound front porch and manicured gardens frame the property, and two massive 200-year-old white oak trees stand on the grounds, giving the home its name and creating a timeless, stately appearance.

The property includes 1.6 acres of grounds with gardens, a backyard event lawn, and terrace areas, allowing ceremonies outdoors and cocktails on the grounds. Six individually furnished guest rooms are available on-site, making it possible for the wedding party and close family to stay overnight. The intimate guest count means the house is best suited to smaller, refined celebrations rather than large receptions.

In August 2024, Down Home North Carolina purchased the property for $1.5 million to operate it as the Reclaim Carolina Center, a community gathering space. The bed and breakfast operated through October 2024, and event operations may continue or shift under the new ownership, so prospective couples should verify current availability directly with the venue.
