The Space

A 24-story, 370-foot hotel on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, the Claridge was built in 1930 by architect John McShain during a stretch of construction so quiet afterward that it stood as the last grand hotel built from scratch in the city until the 1980s. It opened with 400 rooms and earned the nickname Skyscraper by the Sea, a name that still fits given how much of the surrounding city has stayed low-rise around it.

The building operated as a casino from 1981 to 2012 under the Claridge name, with a casino floor spread across three levels totaling 60,000 square feet of gaming space. In 2009 that floor was rebranded as theRIDGE and rebuilt around a dance club concept, with a dance floor and DJ set up at the literal center of the room, a fact that makes this one of the few venues in this dossier with a documented history of live DJ entertainment already built into its design.

Capacity & Layout

Gambling ended at the Claridge in winter 2012, and in 2014 TJM Properties of Clearwater, Florida bought the property and returned it to a stand-alone hotel with 500 rooms and no casino floor. Today the property runs event spaces including OceanView, which holds up to 250 guests for a banquet, and the Celebrity Theatre, which seats up to 350 in a theatre-style setup, alongside a Grand Ballroom, Main Ballroom, Conference Center, Southampton room, and an Art Gallery space.

That range, a 250-guest OceanView room up to a 350-seat theatre, gives a couple real flexibility in guest count without needing to change hotels for a bigger or smaller wedding. The Grand Ballroom and Main Ballroom sit alongside those two spaces, along with a Conference Center and the Southampton room, so a wedding weekend with a rehearsal dinner, ceremony, and reception can realistically stay inside the same building across several different rooms.

Amenities

Guests staying at the hotel have a heated indoor pool available year-round, along with dining split between Twenties, an Italian restaurant on the sixth floor, and VUE, a rooftop bar on the twenty-third floor with the kind of Atlantic City skyline view that makes for a natural cocktail-hour setting before a reception downstairs. The property is entirely non-smoking, a detail worth passing along to guests booking rooms for the weekend.

Parking runs valet at $35 a day or self-park at $25 a day, and a resort fee of $18 per night applies on top of room tax, figures worth folding into a couple’s overall wedding weekend budget for out-of-town guests. The hotel also hosts the Chicken Bone Beach Jazz series during the cooler months, a recurring live-music tradition that shows this is a property already comfortable programming entertainment, not just renting out empty rooms.

Location & Getting There

The Claridge sits on the Boardwalk between Park Place and Indiana Avenue, in the heart of Atlantic City’s casino and hotel district, so out-of-town guests arrive into a walkable stretch of boardwalk, restaurants, and other hotels rather than a standalone property in isolation. The building’s history runs deep in the city too, from hosting a 1943 United Nations conference with delegates from 44 nations to Marilyn Monroe staying there in the 1950s while judging the Miss America Pageant.

That history with entertainment is not incidental to the room a DJ works today: the building’s own casino-era floor was once rebuilt specifically around a center-stage DJ booth for theRIDGE nightclub, which means whoever designed that space already thought hard about how sound needed to travel across a large, hard-floored gaming room. A modern reception in the Grand Ballroom or OceanView room inherits a building with real experience hosting amplified music at scale, not just banquets.
