The Space
The Chauncey Hotel sits on 370 acres of lakeside woodlands that were once a working dairy farm and the Stony Brook Hunt Club before Educational Testing Service bought the property in 1954. ETS founder Henry Chauncey was hiking the land with his wife Laurie when they pictured it as the organization’s future home, and the Chauncey Conference Center was dedicated in 1972 as a three-million-dollar facility on ETS’s 25th anniversary.
Laurie House, the estate’s original structure, traces back to 1769 as the Francis Huff farmhouse and later operated as a hunt club before its seven guest rooms were updated with Ethan Allen furniture. Between the 93-room main hotel, Laurie House, a lake with fountains, walking trails, and a seasonal Garden Pavilion Tent, the property gives a couple a genuine estate to move through across a wedding weekend rather than a single ballroom.
Capacity & Layout
The Garden Pavilion Tent, available May through October, seats up to 180 for a plated dinner or 200 for a cocktail-style reception, while the property’s 12 meeting rooms across 10,500 square feet give a couple indoor options the rest of the year. A gazebo overlooking the lake handles ceremonies, so the walk from vows to reception can stay entirely on the grounds without a shuttle between locations.
With 100 total guest rooms, 93 in the main hotel and 7 in Laurie House, out-of-town guests can stay on site rather than driving back to a hotel after the reception ends. Laurie House itself adds a living room, library, drawing room, and patio, which gives a smaller wedding party or rehearsal dinner a separate, quieter building apart from the main hotel’s meeting rooms and dining room.
Amenities
The Solomon Dining Room and CBar handle food and drink service, and the property is IACC-certified, a distinction held by only the top one percent of meeting venues worldwide, which reflects the level of coordination the conference and events staff are used to running. An indoor saltwater pool built in 2016, with natural light and an adjacent patio and fireplace, gives guests a place to unwind outside the wedding schedule itself.
Because the Garden Pavilion Tent is seasonal, available only May through October, couples marrying outside that window plan their reception indoors from the start rather than treating an indoor space as a rain backup. The property’s walking trails and lake give photographers real depth to work with beyond the tent and the gazebo.
Location & Getting There
The Chauncey Hotel sits a few miles outside downtown Princeton, roughly midway between New York City and Philadelphia, with Newark Liberty about 36 miles away and Philadelphia International about 42.5 miles away for out-of-state guests flying in. That location makes it a realistic gathering point for a guest list split between two metro areas rather than favoring one side.
For sound, the difference between the open-air gazebo and tent setting and the enclosed Solomon Dining Room or meeting rooms is the main thing a DJ plans around here: a tent reception needs weather-aware gear and open-air coverage, while an indoor meeting-room reception behaves like a hotel ballroom, with hard walls that carry a mix cleanly across a seated dinner.
