The Space
The Barrel Room at Catawba Brewing opened in 2017 in the Plaza-Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte. The 4,300-square-foot space is built around the brewery’s working inventory: 200 oak barrels line the walls from floor to ceiling, creating a dramatic and authentic backdrop. The barrels are not decoration, they are functional equipment from the brewing process, aged in place and repurposed as architectural elements. Overhead, a chandelier runs down the center of the room in a single dramatic line, creating a glowing focal point and defining the main aisle for ceremony entries or dance floor movement.
The setting is industrial-refined, with the honest materials of barrel-making on display alongside formal event lighting and polished concrete flooring. It feels both rustic and current, the kind of venue that appeals to couples who want authenticity without abandoning style. The brewery operates as both a production facility and event space, so the beer list is genuine, the house beers are what guests will drink, not a curated selection from elsewhere.
Capacity & Layout
The Barrel Room holds up to 230 guests standing and is well-suited to cocktail receptions or a combination ceremony and reception flow. The barrels and central chandelier naturally define zones without requiring walls or dividers, so the space flows as one unified area. If you prefer, you can set up ceremony seating at one end with the chandelier as a backdrop, then convert to reception mode by clearing chairs and arranging tables and dance floor.
A private bar is included, minimizing the footprint needed for beverage service and keeping the bar integrated into the room rather than tucked to the side or requiring a separate service area.
Amenities
The brewery is both a working production facility and an event space, so the on-site bar is genuine, beer from the house brewery, wine selections, and full liquor. In-house catering is available, meaning you can coordinate directly with Catawba for food service. Sound equipment is included with the rental. Climate control (air conditioning and heating) keeps the space comfortable year-round, important for a venue that uses exposed brick, concrete, and metal materials that would otherwise absorb and radiate heat or cold.
The industrial architecture means setup is straightforward: the barrels and chandelier are permanent fixtures that work as your backdrop, and the open floor accommodates tables, a dance floor, or ceremony seating without modification or damage to the structure.
Location & Getting There
Plaza-Midwood is a walkable neighborhood in central Charlotte with galleries, shops, and restaurants nearby. The area has a creative, energetic feel with a mix of established businesses and newer ventures. Guests arriving from outside the city will find it easily accessible from major highways, and the brewery’s parking situation is straightforward for event-day logistics. The neighborhood is located roughly 10 miles from Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
The room’s hard surfaces, concrete, metal, and wood, reflect sound readily. The central location of the chandelier provides a natural mounting point for overhead lighting and audio support. A DJ setup works well from either end of the room, with the bar providing a natural north wall to anchor the sound system and provide a visual reference point for music delivery.
