The Space
The Carolina Club occupies the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on the University of North Carolina campus at Chapel Hill, established in March 1993. The center opened after several years of construction, built as a legacy project initiated by alumnus George Watts Hill, who in 1986 pledged a challenge gift of three and a half million dollars, the largest single donation by a living alumnus in University history at that time. The capital campaign ultimately raised twelve and a half million to complete the facility. The building itself expresses the significance of this investment, with elegant proportions, quality finishes, and a setting that anchors the UNC campus experience.
Seven private dining rooms comprise the club, ranging from intimate to grand in scale. Alumni Hall serves as the primary ballroom, capable of seating 500 guests, with a built-in stage and access to an outdoor terrace. The architecture and design reflect both the tradition of the university and the aspirations of a modern event space.
Capacity & Layout
Alumni Hall, the largest ballroom, accommodates up to 500 guests seated for dinner and dancing. The club can expand to serve up to 1,000 guests by using multiple spaces simultaneously, making it flexible for everything from intimate dinners for two to large receptions and galas. Named private dining rooms, including O’Herron’s, Traditions, Dowed & Harris, and Peebles, each serve specific purposes and accommodate different group sizes. The outdoor terrace adjoining Alumni Hall expands options for weather and ambiance.
The club is positioned as the primary event venue for significant UNC occasions and gatherings, with the infrastructure and layout to handle diverse event needs. Membership operates through Carolina Alumni, and the club draws users from alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of the University.
Amenities
The Carolina Club includes full on-site catering and dining service, with food and alcohol served exclusively through the club. A fine vintage wine selection and full bar service complement the dining. Meeting equipment includes speakerphones, projection screens, microphones, podiums, projectors, and WiFi throughout the facility. Alumni Hall features a built-in stage and presentation technology. Complimentary parking via the Rams Head Deck is available to dining members, with additional limited free spaces on Stadium Drive after 5pm.
The club provides the amenities expected of a premier university-affiliated venue: professional catering, full bar service, technical support, and event staffing. Everything is designed to let you focus on your celebration rather than logistics.
Location & Getting There
Located on the UNC Chapel Hill campus at 150 Stadium Drive, the venue sits in the heart of the university. The positioning means easy access for anyone familiar with Chapel Hill and UNC, but also puts the venue in an established institutional setting with strong traditions and history. The town of Chapel Hill is approximately 30 minutes from Raleigh and draws people from across the Research Triangle region.
Alumni Hall’s scale and the multiple rooms throughout the club feature traditional ballroom design with good ceiling height and hard surfaces, wood, plaster, stone, that create the acoustic characteristics of a formal venue; a DJ position in Alumni Hall can fill the space naturally, with the built-in stage and sound system infrastructure supporting audio work throughout the room and onto the outdoor terrace.
