The Space
Four miles into Paris Mountain State Park, Camp Buckhorn sits where the Civilian Conservation Corps left it in 1936 and 1937: a lodge and ten cabins built from rubble stone and rough hewn logs to match the ridge around them. The complex is part of the Paris Mountain State Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, and the CCC’s fieldstone fireplace and hand fitted walls are original, not reproductions.
The lodge holds the dining and meeting hall, a state-of-the-art kitchen, and restrooms with shower facilities, while the ten primitive cabins sit apart from it, each fitted with two sets of bunk beds. A stone patio off the lodge holds two outdoor tables and a gas grill, and a lawn beside the building is open enough for a tent. The property is roughly six miles from downtown Greenville, close enough for guests who do not want a long drive after a mountain ceremony.
Capacity & Layout
The dining and meeting hall seats up to 75, which sets the practical ceiling for a seated reception here: past that number the room and the kitchen behind it are working at capacity, so couples planning around 75 or fewer get the most comfortable fit. Overnight lodging across the ten cabins tops out at 40, split into groups of four per cabin with two bunk beds apiece, which suits a wedding party or close family staying the weekend rather than a full guest list.
For a ceremony, the lawn near the lodge is the option, large enough for tenting if the weather calls for cover. That leaves two real layouts to plan around: an indoor reception in the dining hall with the fireplace as a backdrop, or an outdoor ceremony on the lawn followed by a walk to the lodge. Couples who have toured it plan their timeline around that short transition rather than a long shuttle between separate ceremony and reception sites.
Amenities
The kitchen is described by the park as state-of-the-art, with a six-burner stove, refrigerator, freezer, microwave and food prep tables, which matters for a caterer working a full dinner service rather than a drop-off buffet. The lodge has complimentary wifi, and restrooms and showers are split between the lodge and a centralized shower building among the cabins, so guests staying overnight are not walking far for either.
The patio’s two tables and gas grill work well for a rehearsal dinner or a low-key day-after brunch, and the primitive cabins are wired but simple, so guests coming just for the day are not missing much by not staying over. There is no formal parking lot beyond what the park provides, and it is a working state park lodge first, an event space second, which shapes everything from decor rules to how much can be added to the walls.
Location & Getting There
Camp Buckhorn sits about six miles from downtown Greenville and roughly four miles inside Paris Mountain State Park itself, a real drive past the park gate rather than a quick pull-off, so guests need clear directions and should plan extra time getting in. The mountain was originally Cherokee land before Irish settler Richard Pearis arrived around 1765, and Greenville’s water system used the site as a reservoir starting in 1888 before the CCC built the camp as it stands now.
We have worked a wedding in this lodge, and the setting is unmistakably rustic: log and stone walls, a low beamed ceiling, and hard wood and stone floors throughout the dining hall. Sound stays close inside that space rather than escaping into open air, so a DJ can run at a moderate level and still fill the room, though the stone fireplace wall and hard floors mean voices and bass both carry more than they would in a carpeted ballroom.
