The Space
A three-story brick building built in 1908 as a Raleigh elementary school, designed by architect James M. Kennedy, now houses Burning Coal Theatre Company in the Murphey School Auditorium, the oldest standing public school building in the city. The auditorium itself was the site of a real piece of Raleigh history: the city school board voted there in 1960 to begin desegregating Raleigh City Schools.
The building sat empty for years after the school closed before Burning Coal, founded in 1995, raised more than $1.5 million to renovate it in 2008, working from a shell with no electricity, no HVAC, no plumbing, and holes in the walls, ceiling, and flooring. What emerged is a flexible black box theatre with balcony seating on three sides, a working professional stage rather than a rented banquet room.
Capacity & Layout
The room holds up to 150 guests, configured as 150 in a banquet layout, 140 for theatre-style seating, or 150 for a standing reception, numbers that make it a genuinely small, intimate venue for a wedding rather than a large hall. At 4,000 total square feet, the black box design uses movable platforms and chairs, so the layout can shift from ceremony seating to a reception floor within the same room.
Tall windows bring in natural light with blackout shades available for anyone who wants to control it, and the balcony wraps three sides of the space, which gives guests a second vantage point above the main floor. Because the seating is built to be reconfigured rather than fixed, a couple can set the room for a ceremony and then have it reset for dancing without moving to a separate space.
Amenities
The lobby carries a reclaimed wood and concrete bar with a mini fridge and microwave, along with modern restrooms, giving a wedding reception a real bar setup rather than a folding table. Backstage, a private dressing area and a full-size fridge with counter space for catering prep mean the wedding party has somewhere to get ready and caterers have somewhere to stage food, both built into the theatre rather than improvised.
Lighting equipment from the theatre’s own stock is available to rent if a qualified professional runs it, which opens up genuine stage lighting for a reception rather than string lights alone. Given the company has performed in New York, London, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, and Capital Fringe in Washington, DC, the technical backbone here is built for real productions, not a one-off rental.
Location & Getting There
The theatre sits in downtown Raleigh, adjacent to the Historic Oakwood district, putting a wedding here within walking distance of one of the city’s older residential neighborhoods rather than out on the edge of town. That downtown position means guests have restaurants and lodging nearby without needing to drive far from the venue itself.
Inside the black box, the reception plays out in a room built for live sound and staging, not a converted gym or hall, so a DJ setup benefits from the same acoustics the theatre uses for its own shows, with the balcony and reconfigurable platform seating keeping sound close and controlled rather than lost in an oversized room.
