The Space
Built in 1905 by English brick manufacturer Albert Bunn out of his own bricks, this Colonial Revival mansion two blocks from downtown Asheville was a family home before it was a venue, built for his wife Kittie and their three children. His son Robert Bunn later inherited it, and his wife Fannie ran Bunn Antiques downtown while living there, so the house carries three generations of one family before it ever became known as the Bunn House.
Ridgely Dubel bought the property in 2013 to keep it from being redeveloped and spent two years restoring it, work that earned an Adaptive Reuse award from the Asheville Preservation Society. What emerged is a 1.5-acre property with the mansion itself, gardens, a vineyard with a fire pit, and a rooftop terrace, a private estate rather than a converted hall, with the house’s original character intact through the renovation.
Capacity & Layout
The property holds up to 200 guests for an event, with ceremonies typically set on the outdoor lawn, a gently sloping hill with shade cover available, and receptions moving into tent-covered gardens or the mansion’s indoor rooms depending on the season. That range makes the Bunn House workable for a mid-size wedding while still keeping the scale personal, since the reception is happening on private grounds rather than in a rented hall.
Overnight, the house sleeps 8 across four bedrooms, three upstairs with king beds and one on the first floor with its own separate entrance, each room with a private terrace or balcony. That layout means the wedding party can actually stay on site through the weekend, getting ready in the same rooms guests will later walk past on the way to the garden, rather than commuting in from a hotel.
Amenities
Every ensuite bathroom has a Thermasol-Pro steam shower, L’Occitane en Provence amenities, and heated floors, and the bedrooms are outfitted in Frette linens, the kind of detail that puts the Bunn House closer to a boutique hotel than a standard rental property. A private chef or catered meals can be arranged on request, and the full gourmet kitchen carries a Sub-Zero icemaker and filtered water dispenser alongside a bar area for the reception.
The rooftop terrace gives 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and downtown Asheville, a built-in photo location that does not require leaving the property, and the vineyard and fire pit add a second outdoor gathering spot once the reception winds down. The whole property runs on geothermal heating and cooling, with electric car charging stations and a water bottle refill station, and stays 100 percent non-smoking and non-vaping throughout.
Location & Getting There
The Bunn House sits two blocks from downtown Asheville, close enough that guests can walk into the city for the rehearsal dinner or the morning after, but private enough on its 1.5 acres that the wedding itself feels set apart from downtown traffic and noise. Check-in is guaranteed at 4pm and check-out at 10am, with code entry unavailable before 4pm, so vendor access and setup timing need to work around that window.
With the ceremony on the sloping outdoor lawn and the reception splitting between tented gardens and the mansion’s indoor rooms, sound moves differently across the property depending on where the party is: outdoors under the tent, a DJ setup runs open to the yard and the vineyard beyond it, while moving the reception indoors into the mansion’s original rooms tightens the sound into a smaller, closer space for dancing.
