The Space
Forty acres in the Yadkin Valley foothills carry the bones of a working mill at Buck Shoals Cabins, land first recorded as a mill site in the 1780s and burned during a Civil War raid in 1865 before it cycled through a saw mill, a post office, and a block-making company into the 1920s. Jeff and Melissa Brown bought the property in 2000, and in 2019 they began restoring the old dairy barn and milking parlor into the venue standing today.
What that restoration produced is a 5,000-square-foot barn with high beamed ceilings and polished wooden floors, paired with an outdoor amphitheater built around a covered wooden stage and built-in stadium seating. A creek runs through the property with a waterfall used for photographs and ceremonies, so the space reads as working farm turned event venue rather than a barn built new for weddings, with real weathered structure under the finish.
Capacity & Layout
The amphitheater seats up to 200 in its stadium seating, and outdoor reception space on the grounds holds a comparable 200 to 220 guests, numbers that make Buck Shoals a genuine mid-size wedding venue rather than an intimate backyard setup. The barn adds its own footprint with a loft area above the main 5,000-square-foot floor, giving a couple a second indoor option if weather turns or if the reception moves inside after an outdoor ceremony.
Layout here typically runs ceremony at the amphitheater, then a shift to the barn or the open grounds for the reception, with separate bridal and groom suites for getting ready and a prep kitchen on site for caterers. Cabin accommodations on the property sleep up to six adults and come as part of multi-day packages, so a wedding weekend can keep the whole party on the grounds rather than sending everyone back to a hotel each night.
Amenities
We have worked events at Buck Shoals before, and the amenity list holds up: the covered stage at the amphitheater means a ceremony can proceed rain or shine, the barn’s loft gives an extra vantage point for a band or photographer, and the creek and waterfall give a couple a real water feature for photos without leaving the property. Handicap-accessible facilities are listed as well, which matters on 40 acres of working farmland.
Outside caterers are permitted, with a prep kitchen built for that purpose, and parking is available on site rather than off in a shared lot down the road. None of the finish here is manufactured for weddings from scratch, the barn is a converted dairy barn and the amphitheater sits on a former mill site, so the amenities read as restored working structures rather than a purpose-built banquet hall.
Location & Getting There
Buck Shoals sits in Hamptonville, in the Yadkin Valley wine country foothills, a rural stretch of the county that puts the venue among vineyards and farmland rather than close to a town center. Guests coming from Winston-Salem or the Triad should plan for a real country drive, and the setting is part of the appeal for a couple who wants their wedding day away from a city backdrop.
With the ceremony held outdoors at the amphitheater and the reception splitting between the barn and the open grounds, sound behaves differently across the property: the covered stage projects cleanly across the stadium seating for a ceremony, while the barn’s high beamed ceiling and polished wood floor give a DJ setup indoors more natural reflection and volume once the reception moves inside for dancing.
