The Space
Boone Hall Plantation traces back to 1681, when Major John Boone received the original land grant, and the property has grown crops continuously for more than 320 years, making it one of the oldest working plantations in the country. The Cotton Dock, the event space itself, sits on Wampocheone Creek at the edge of that history: a rustic waterfront building rather than the plantation mansion, built for receptions and ceremonies rather than tours.
The grounds are anchored by the Avenue of Oaks, 88 live oaks first planted in 1743 and completed a century later in 1843, a corridor that has become the plantation’s signature image. The property is also part of a documented and preserved history that includes nine original brick slave cabins from 1790 to 1810, recognized as an African American Historic Place in South Carolina in 2009, alongside the working gardens and grounds a wedding actually uses.
Capacity & Layout
The Cotton Dock seats 225 guests without a dance floor or 150 with one, and holds up to 300 for a standing, mingling reception, giving a couple real flexibility depending on whether dancing is the priority or a full seated dinner is. The dock area in front of the building handles a ceremony with up to 130 chairs, set right over the creek, so the ceremony and reception can both happen within steps of each other rather than requiring a shuttle between sites.
Beyond the Cotton Dock itself, the property offers the Front Lawn near the mansion, the Back Lawn overlooking the creek with a 40 by 40 foot clam shell tent called the Pavilion, and the Side Lawn along the Avenue of Oaks, so a couple can choose a different backdrop for the ceremony than for the reception if they want the day to move across more than one setting.
Amenities
The Cotton Dock is heated with a working fireplace but is not air-conditioned on its own, though air-conditioning packages are available from May through September for warmer dates, which is worth planning around directly with the venue for a summer wedding. Restrooms are located inside the Cotton Dock and near the parking area, and ample parking is included with the rental, along with RV parking for guests road-tripping in.
Catering and bar service both have to come from outside vendors, with a 12% service fee applied to food and beverage, and the plantation works from an approved partner list rather than an open policy. There is no on-site accommodation, so lodging has to be arranged elsewhere, but the venue has been named Best Wedding Venue by both Charleston City Paper and Moultrie News in 2021 and 2022, and ranked the number one plantation in the Charleston area by USA Today’s 10Best.
Location & Getting There
Boone Hall sits in Mount Pleasant, about 8 miles from downtown Charleston, with Charleston International Airport as the nearest airport, which keeps the plantation’s rural, 738-acre feel within easy reach of the city for guests flying in. Grounds are grass and hard compacted sand rather than paved paths, so electric wheelchairs generally work best, and both the mansion and the historic cabins involve a few steps, with video tours offered as an alternative for guests who cannot manage them.
Events have to begin after the plantation closes to the public, with setup starting at 9am for the Cotton Dock, Pavilion, and Back Lawn, or 3pm for the Front Lawn, and a noise curfew of 10pm Sunday through Thursday or 11pm Friday and Saturday, with all guests departing by midnight. Because the Cotton Dock is an open-sided waterfront building rather than a fully enclosed hall, a DJ setup there plays to an open room with a working fireplace and creek views on either side, so sound has room to travel rather than bouncing off four closed walls.
