The Space

Three childhood friends from upstate New York, Greg Booth, Scott Hallock, and Todd Rath, founded Blue Toad Hard Cider in January 2015, and the Virginia location sits on a historic 27-acre farm at the base of Wintergreen Resort with 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The original farmhouse on the property, known as High View Farm, dates back to the 1840s, so the working cidery a couple books today grew up around a genuinely old piece of land rather than being built to look old.

The name traces back to a pub Todd once owned in Virginia, inspired by the mountains and his own nickname, Toad. That same character carries into the Cider Hall, the event space at the center of the property, with padded wooden chairs, 5-foot round tables, wooden floors, and a catering kitchen built in. The South Fork Rockfish River borders the land, and guests are close enough to walk down and dip their feet in it between toasts.

Capacity & Layout

The Cider Hall seats 130 people comfortably, with about 3,600 square feet split between indoor space and a covered patio, and 150 indoor seats when the layout calls for it. Outside, the property handles far more: over 400 tabled seats are set up across the grounds, so a couple planning a larger reception can move cocktail hour and dinner outdoors and still bring everyone back inside the Cider Hall for dancing later in the night.

Ceremony sites are spread across the meadows, the orchards, and a riverside spot with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop, and a lush meadow is also available for tenting if a couple wants a larger footprint than the Cider Hall alone provides. The property is flat and ground-level throughout, with handicap accessible bathrooms in the Cider Hall, which keeps the walk between ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception simple for guests of any mobility.

Amenities

A bridal suite is built into the Cider Hall, and the full bar pours the cidery’s own ciders on tap, including Paddy Green, a Gold Medal winner at the Great Lakes International Cider & Perry Competition and a Silver Medal winner at the Virginia Governor’s Cup. Across its history the cidery has earned 22 total GLINTCAP medals, 2 gold, 7 silver, and 12 bronze, plus a Best in Class award, which says something about what is actually in the glass at the reception.

There is room for a caterer, and food trucks are on site most weekends if a couple wants something more casual than a plated dinner. Outside, a covered porch and the shaded grove along the historic Winery Lane give guests somewhere to be that is not full sun, and a playground and yard games keep any kids at the wedding occupied without needing a separate kids’ table plan.

Location & Getting There

The venue sits at the base of Wintergreen Mountain Top Ski & Golf Resort, and the Appalachian Trail is close enough that guests staying through the weekend have real hiking, waterfall paths, and swimming holes to fill their extra time. RVs and campervans are welcome through the Harvest Hosts program, which matters for a couple whose guest list includes people road-tripping in rather than flying.

The cidery itself has grown from two flavors and no packaging in 2015 to canned distribution across Central Virginia, Western New York, and Albany, and that same small-operation attention shows up in how the grounds are laid out for events. With the Cider Hall’s wooden floors and enclosed footprint set against the fully outdoor ceremony and meadow spaces, a DJ typically runs one system that covers the indoor dance floor while a separate ceremony setup handles the outdoor site, since the two spaces do not share sound the way one open room would.
