The Space

The Big Chill occupies a building in Charlotte’s Dilworth neighborhood that started out as the city’s first roller skating rink before becoming Charlotte’s first and largest live entertainment and dining club. The venue opened in its current form in November 1999, and the original hardwood floors from the skating rink days are still underfoot, giving the space genuine history rather than a reproduced one.

At 13,000 square feet, the building holds a built-in stage, a 1,000-square-foot dance floor, a fireside lounge with its own bar, and several separate rooms rather than one open hall. That division into distinct areas, lounge, stage, dance floor, and additional rooms, means a reception here moves through more than one kind of space instead of staying in a single room for the whole night.

Capacity & Layout

The Big Chill accommodates up to 615 guests for a stand-up reception or up to 300 for a seated dinner, a spread wide enough to run either format depending on how a couple wants the evening to feel. The venue sets a 100-guest minimum for wedding receptions, placing it firmly in the range of a mid-size to large wedding rather than an intimate one.

With the Fireside Lounge, the dance floor, and the built-in stage as separate zones, a couple can stage cocktail hour in the lounge, dinner in one of the other rooms, and dancing on the 1,000-square-foot floor without physically reconfiguring any single space between courses of the evening. The venue is wheelchair accessible throughout, and free parking is available both on-site and on the street, which simplifies arrival for a guest list in the hundreds.

Amenities

The built-in stage and fireside lounge and bar are fixed features of the building rather than rented additions, so a band, a DJ, or a small ceremony can use the stage as a focal point without extra staging costs. In-house catering and bar service are available, and the venue does not allow outside alcohol or catering, which keeps food and drink centralized under one vendor relationship.

The Big Chill won a Knot Best of Venues award in 2014, and the original hardwood floors from its skating-rink years remain part of what makes the space distinctive rather than generic. One restriction worth knowing ahead of time: the venue does not permit entertainment to use smoke or dry ice, so any planned effects need to work within that limit.
