The Space
This building has worn three names. It started as the Azalea Station Post Office, later became a Boys and Girls Club of America facility, and reopened in 2023 as Azalea Station under owner Billy Batten, who also runs Alcove Beer Garden nearby in the same Cargo District on Castle Street. That history is part of what gives the room its character, since the building was never designed as an event hall in the first place.
The space runs 12,000 square feet total, with a 5,000-square-foot bar area that mixes indoor and outdoor seating. A second-floor band area overlooks the main floor, a commercial kitchen sits on site, and two-story glass doors open directly onto the Cargo District’s shared courtyard, connecting the indoor room to the outdoor space rather than sealing it off. By day the same room runs as a coffee lounge, then shifts into a full bar in the evening, so the space itself is built to change character through the day.
Capacity & Layout
The bar area itself seats 70 to 80, with additional room in the wider event space beyond that count, so the venue can host a more intimate gathering in the bar proper or spread a bigger crowd across the full 12,000 square feet. That range gives a couple flexibility that a single fixed banquet room does not.
Movable furniture, customizable lighting, and high ceilings mean the layout is not locked into one configuration. Tables can shift for a seated ceremony, then get cleared for dancing later in the night, and the lighting can be adjusted through the evening to move from a bright cocktail hour to a lower, more club-like feel for the reception.
Amenities
A commercial kitchen on site is run by We Are True Blue, described as one of the area’s premier caterers, so food service does not depend on an outside kitchen being trucked in. The full-service bar covers specialty cocktails, local distillery spirits, craft brews, domestic beers, and a wine selection, all handled in-house.
Parking is shared with Alcove Beer Garden next door, in a lot with plenty of space for guests from both venues. The bar currently runs to midnight, and the two-story glass doors bring in enough natural light that daytime portions of an event do not need to rely on interior lighting alone.
Location & Getting There
The venue sits in the Cargo District on Castle Street, a few minutes’ drive from historic downtown Wilmington and reasonably close to Wilmington International Airport for guests flying in, and it is a room our team has already worked. Being part of the Cargo District also puts guests within walking distance of the neighborhood’s other bars and restaurants before or after the event.
The second-floor band area sits above and overlooks the main floor, and the room is built with high ceilings and acoustics meant to handle live music, which gives a DJ setup real headroom to work with rather than a low, boxed-in ceiling. With the two-story glass doors open to the courtyard, we treat the space as a hybrid of indoor and outdoor sound, keeping the system contained enough that music carries across the open floor without overwhelming the courtyard beyond it.
