The Space
Avos Ria Mar has been serving South River since 1987, when Manuel da Silva opened the restaurant after spending years as a head chef in Newark’s Ironbound district starting in 1969. He brought that Portuguese culinary background with him, along with recipes of his own, and built a restaurant that has been open since 1987, with da Silva and his children still running it.
The restaurant sits in Middlesex County and pairs a main dining room with a separate banquet area built for private celebrations. That dining room was recently renovated with a seaside aesthetic, a natural fit for a restaurant built around fresh seafood, and the update gives the space a more finished, current look for anyone booking a reception rather than walking in for dinner.
Capacity & Layout
Avos Ria Mar hosts birthdays, showers, anniversaries, communions, weddings, and other parties in its banquet area, a space set apart from the main dining room. Keeping the celebration in its own room means a wedding reception is not competing for space or attention with regular dinner service happening elsewhere in the restaurant on the same night, and guests are not seated within earshot of unrelated tables.
Outdoor seating is also available on the property, which gives a couple the option of moving cocktail hour or part of the evening outside rather than keeping every guest in the banquet room for the full event. Between the indoor banquet space and the outdoor seating, there is room to shape the evening in more than one setting without leaving the restaurant.
Amenities
The kitchen runs on original recipes created by Manuel da Silva himself, built around fresh seafood and traditional Portuguese cooking, so a reception dinner here comes from the same menu that built the restaurant’s reputation over nearly four decades rather than a generic banquet package. A full bar is available as well, covering drinks for the full evening.
The dining room’s recent renovation leaned into a seaside look that suits the seafood-forward menu, giving the room a cleaner, more current feel for photos and for guests settling in for dinner. Between the food, the bar, and the room itself, the amenities here read more like a real restaurant night out than a rented hall dressed up for the occasion.
Location & Getting There
The restaurant sits in South River in Middlesex County, a straightforward stop for guests coming from around central New Jersey, and it is a room where we have already played an event. Being an established, decades-old local restaurant rather than a stand-alone event hall means guests already have a sense of what the food and the room will be like, since many will have eaten there on an ordinary night at some point.
Sound in the banquet area works the way it does in most restaurant private rooms: a contained indoor space separate from the main dining room, which keeps the music and the crowd from spilling into the rest of the restaurant. When the outdoor seating is part of the plan, we treat that portion of the evening as an open-air setup and shift back indoors for dinner and dancing, so the sound system is set for whichever room the moment calls for.
