The story of Flat Mountain Farm starts in December 2019, when owners Christopher and Margaret Shutze, the husband and wife duo of Shutze Studio, moved to Highlands with their two young boys to make magic happen. They purchased the property – home to a rustic but run down private paradise –  from an eighth generation Highlander, who spent 40 years developing the property himself.  Even though it was clearly in need of repair and rejuvenation, both Margaret and Chris saw huge as of yet untapped potential in the antique log cabins & barn on the property.

In their previous professional lives, Margaret worked for international hospitality firms, and worked on prestigious projects such as the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, Boca Raton Resort and Club, A Waldorf Astoria Resort and Four Seasons Vail; while Chris has been in demand creating specialty homes and custom furniture with award-winning architects for over 20 years! Some of his clients include McApline, Travis & Travis and Wilson Associates. And impressively, their work has been featured in many outstanding publications and platforms including Architectural Digest, Interior Design magazine, Boutique Design Magazine, Hospitality Design Magazine, Country Living Magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings and more. Impressive if you ask us, but what’s even more impressive is how humble and down to earth Christopher and Margaret are, even with their great many achievements!

As of today, Flat Mountain Farm is home to a newly renovated 28-acre haven, capable of hosting up to 18 overnight guests and hosting posh private events for between 18-175 guests. The Farm itself is located just outside the cute and quaint town of Highland NC, and less than 2 hours driving from both Asheville, NC and Greenville, SC, making it an ideal location for an out of town wedding, without going too far out of town!

Their vision for their gorgeous property and event space is to cater to the truly discerning couple who are looking for a more boutique and bespoke wedding, and to deliver an intimate and fully immersive experience at their exclusive micro-resort. In fact one of their guarantees is that no two weddings at Flat Mountain Farm will ever be the same! And, if you’re looking to find an intimate and exclusive venue for your big day, it would be wise to be equally discerning when it comes to your entertainment! Hint, hint!

And, just think of the wedding photos you can create with 28 lush beautiful acres to explore with your photographer! You’ll almost be overwhelmed for choice when planning your photography locations!

After your wedding you’ll be drawn to returning to Flat Mountain Farm again and again, maybe for an anniversary stay at one of their gorgeous cabins or their adorable glamping Airstream trailer, or maybe to attend one of the workshops/events they host onsite! Their newest offering is for a fall floral workshop, where participants will learn how to create stunning seasonal centerpieces, using both local and foraged materials! Their workshops take place in their gorgeous and newly remodeled antique barn.
